Alesis USB Mic Podcasting Kit with Headphones and Software

I needed a good quality microphone to produce some powerpoint presentations using Camtasia. The microphone easily installs and functions beautifully. It also works great with speech to text applications. For the applications I use, a boom microphone with a headset is uncomfortable and I do not always want to monitor the recording as it is being produced. The headphones are ok and I had a bit of a problem getting the computer configured to work with them with the microphone but once I did they work fine. A good product at a reasonable price.

I purchased this kit to start podcasting. Nice mike with usb input. Comes with OK headphones. Simple connection...I use it with Roxio's sound editor with good results. Very good value. Suggest you purchase a separate pop filter. Hear the result at [...] (click on Podcasts button)

For a relatively inexpensive microphone that doesn't require any external equipment to convert it to USB, I think this is a good buy. I don't count the headphones in the equation since I think they are of poor quality, but I didn't care. I bought it for the mic.

I've only used it with Camtasia, and the audio levels seem low and I get lots of "popping" when I talk when I turn up the level on the mic too much. The levels can be adjusted after the fact in the software, but I didn't expect to run into those issues.

The documentation is almost exclusively about using Audacity, but has almost nothing about the mic itself. For instance, there's a black side and a gold side to the actual mic. Why is that? Do they have different sound pickup patterns? Which should I use? Should I angle it or set it upright when I talk for the best results?

I'm sure an audio expert would know the answers to these questions, but then again, an audio expert probably wouldn't be buying this mic, either. So I've just played with it to see what works.

For semi-pro recording of narration or podcasts by a non-audiophile, this mic works fine.

I use this mic without the headset, for everyday Skyping and to teach online. Audio from my speakers doesn't interfere or cause feedback during live conversations. So the mic provides hands free, high quality audio.

When I purchased and started using it, people were happily surprised at how well my voice came through. An essential tool not just for podcasting but for other online audio as well.

The Alesis USB Podcast mike is the perfect and quick setup for recording Podcast. You will need a foam wind cover or a pop filter, because if there's one weakness this mike has, it's that it pops too much if you talk too close.

I have only the microphone and stand without the headphones and software that comes with this package, so I can't comment on those.

Setting up the mike is easy. Simply plug it in to the USB port on your computer. I use Wavepad sound editor. Windows 7 found the mike immediately with no set up at all. In Wavepad, all I had to do was select the Alesis mike from the pulldown input menu (it had the line-in port set as default). Then I simply set my volume level at minus 12 dB to eliminate the room's background noise.

The Alesis provides a very warm vocal tome optimized for computer speakers. The extreme bottom end is clipped just enough to eliminate low frequency ambient sounds. You can equalize your audio clips to suit your own voice, but for most people, this will not be necessary. The extreme high end rolls off just enough to eliminate the brashness that occurs with other mikes. The mike is designed for close use, as it's noise cancelling ability reduces sound from far away. This is a big plus for any mike used for pod casting and announcing. The air conditioner vent noise and computer fan which can be heard in the room do not get picked up by this mike.

The little microphone stand is an added bonus, and it is rubber shock mounted to reduce table noise.

The end result is a very rich, resonant, natural sounding vocal tone with very little or almost no background noise. Add just a touch of EQ and a little music and you can have a podcast that sounds like it was made in a recording studio. Listen to my recording to hear what it sounds like.

This is a very nice piece of equipment. It installs quickly and is very easy. It is very easy to work with and the mic is excellent, I would recommend it highly. There is only one catch, the headphones come with a HUGE jack and you have to find an adapter to reduce it if you want to use it on your computer. It's well worth the money.

Works great, good price, one complaint; the headphone adapter is not included, which makes it impossible to use without making a separate purchase. I contacted the company and they do sell them for .47, cents plus three dollars shipping and handling - huh? Otherwise, a great product.
