The description of “The Devil” type of monster was both funny and scary. And I liked how Alex’s Dad was both protective of his daughter, and willing to get in the thick of things. A lot of paranormal and urban fantasy books seem to have the kids do everything while the parents aren’t around much, or are left in the dark. Alex’s relationship with her Dad was a nice change to all that.
There is an element of romance to the book, but nothing happens past a few kisses. I did want to smack Sam a few times, especially at the end of the book. But I could also see why he was doing what he did. Hopefully he will be in the next book, I did quite like him as a character.
I also really liked Misty, she was funny and smart. Not just the stereotypical cheerleader she was at first made out to be.
I’ll be picking up book 2 in this series, and if you haven’t read this book yet I suggest you do so.

Alex is just an ordinary tomboy who finds herself in a very extraordinary situation. She knows that monsters do exist and they live right underneath her town. Her friends, her dad, and her high school crush try to save the town from things that go bump in the night.
This book doesn't disappoint in the fast paced action that keeps you turning the pages. I highly recommend it and the price is unbeatable.
Alex is very, very bright. She even skipped three grades in school. That doesn't make her a nerd though. Instead she uses her head to stay out of trouble...even the ones caused by a monster.
Cate Dean succeeds in presenting the reader with an excellent and riveting YA fantasy. The characters are all memorable and well-defined. The action is fast paced and suspenseful. I even caught myself taking brief breaks in reading to allow my mind to take in everything that is happening (and take an extra couple of breaths before diving right in again).
The way she discovers that is a little on the contrived side, but the scene where she is confronting her first monster is genuinely exciting and the consequences of that encounter reverberate through the pages of the book (the first in a trilogy) and power all of the MONSTER HUNTER books. The novel has a lot going for it. a sympathetic heroine. A nice riff on the well-worn werewolf myth. A sexy older man--Sam Emmett is 18 and Alex is 16--and even if 16 is just a distant memory for a reader, it's still possible to melt when Sam tells Alex she has "sea-nymph eyes." Seriously. That line WORKS.
I really enjoyed Alex's voice as she tells her story. I really enjoyed the story and the romance that developed.
I could not give it more stars due to it being a serial and too many unresolved issues were left dangling, hopefully to be resolved in a later book. I hate to be teased without a forewarning that I am not reading a free standing story.
I will look for more books by this writer but not a serial group of books that are somewhat like a TV miniseries.
