Upon immediate inspection of the rim I noticed two disturbing aspects - the spoke nipple ends are sticking out of the internal rim surface by a great amount - probably 2mm and the edges are sharp. This means that to safely use the rim without fear of a blowout, you need to use two layers of high quality velox tape. I would not trust vinyl tape or rubber inserts to this rim. I might even go so far as to suggest sanding down the corners of the spoke ends.
Secondly, I noticed about a 2mm burr or chunk taken out of the outermost drive side threading. I doubt this was due to shipping mishandling as the plastic protector shims should prevent handling damage to that part of the hub. I was concerned that my freewheel would not be able to screw on to the rim or at the very least it would strip the threading. After greasing the freewheel threads, I am happy to report the freewheel threaded on without problems. However, this doesn't mean it won't cause problems on future freewheel changes.
While this is true for most budget oriented wheels, it bears repeating of other reviews that the hub feels a little overtight and a little gritty; I recommend a hub overhaul first thing.
The good - the wheel arrived remarkably true with all spokes appropriately tensioned - it looks/feels like a very strong wheel good enough for loaded touring on my 70s Univega frame. If it weren't for the fact that you have to use two layers of rim tape + the freewheel threading issue, I would have given this rim 4 stars.

I had to purchase a wheel after my old one was warped. Once removing necessary parts from my old rim and installing them on my new wheel, it performed well.Published on December 18, 2012 by sjhill69
As a previous reviewer said, this wheel is drilled for Presta valve tubes and not Schrader.

I bought this to put on my vintage 70's road bike. After I finally finished the bike, I went to tighten the quick release, and it just fell off and will no longer work. Read morePublished on September 28, 2010 by DO NOT BUY
