No individual has made his mark on the world more profoundly than Alexander the Great, the young man who, through war, diplomacy, and Machiavellian means, expanded his empire to include most of the known world--all before he died at age thirty-three. A remarkable man whose path crossed with some of the most influential people, places, and events of all time, Alexander began his combat training at age seven, studied philosophy with Aristotle at age thirteen, kept a copy of Homer's Iliad under his pillow until his death, and introduced Greek and oriental cultural influences throughout his vast empire. Alexander: The Conqueror follows the progression of his conquests through the Near East and Central Asia to the Indus Valley, and introduces Alexander's family, the personalities of his generals, and the cultures of the lands he conquered. Author Laura Foreman examines the complex character of Alexander as student, friend, lover, military genius, and emperor, and explores the many unsolved mysteries surrounding his life: Who did Alexander turn to in passion and for comfort? Was Alexander a careful, amiable mastermind or a drunken brute? Could Alexander have been responsible for his father's murder?Gorgeous landscape photography, numerous images of ancient art and artifacts, and informative, beautifully crafted maps complement the narrative, offering a visual feast along with a lively, insightful narrative of Alexander's life of conquest and intrigue.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Alexander the Great studied philosophy with Aristotle, became king when he was 20, defeated the undefeatable Persian empire five years later and, by the time of his death at age 32, had explored and claimed "the boundaries of the known world." Perhaps history’s most powerful and revered military leader, the Macedonian king receives more royal praise in this new biography by Foreman (Cleopatra’s Palace and Napoleon’s Lost Fleet). Given that existing historical sources on Alexander come several hundred years after his death, and that there is "poor evidence documenting" Alexander’s life, Foreman reasonably extrapolates on the available facts. She begins with the political upheaval and omens surrounding his birth, the rivalries and alliances within his family and his precocious boyhood, during which he cultivated a love affair with Homer’s Iliad as well as with the "sword, javelin and bow." In his ensuing years, Alexander is portrayed as being prone to bouts of aloofness, drunkenness and murderous vengeance; at the same time, he displays more superhuman behavior, manhandling the Oracle at Delphi and slashing the Gordian Knot ("What difference does it make how I loose it?"). Yet the bulk of the text is devoted to what the conqueror did best—conquering. Foreman’s well-written narrative follows Alexander’s trek through the Near East and Central Asia, giving the reader a play-by-play account of his battles, victories, strategies and military brilliance. Generously interspersed with impressive color photos of maps, art and ancient artifacts, the book is a fun read for those who aren’t bent upon serious scholarship.

"It is a lovely thing to live with courage, and die leaving an everlasting fame". These are Alexander's words. Whether he was Greek or Macedonian, it does make a difference of course, but it does not change who the man was.The pictures, in this book are gorgeous.Having read so much and still reading about Alexander's life, I strongly feel that Greece and Macedonia were entertwined together, and it shall be so regardless of what we human say about old Macedonia and Greece. After all we are all God's creatures.

The cover of the book by itself is so stunning!!!!!

I would have to disgree with some of the reviews here. Eugene Borza did not say that the ancient Macedonians were not Greeks. Eugene Borza stated in his own book "Makedonika" (1995) that the ancient Macedonians were "derived from North Western Greek stock" and were proto-Greek speakers. In an earlier book written in 1990 Borza had already stated that "the Macedonians themselves may have originated from the same population pool as other Greek people". It should also be pointed out that certainly from the mid 90's on, more than 95% of modern historians consider the Macedonians as a northern Greek tribe, whilst linguists talk of about the "North Western Greek colour" of the ancient Macedonian idiom and in the same way keep on stressing out the basic phonological feature that distinguishes ancient Macedonian from other Greek dialects.

The greatest of the great. Laura Foreman wrote a truly great book about Alexander of Macedon. She covered the empire expansionist icon's life thoroughly and systematically. Beginning with Philip of Macedon's rise to power, Foreman chronicled Alexander's birth, his contemptuous relationship with his mother and father and his quest to rule the known world.

Foreman's chapters read like parchment from court scribes who followed the Greece's foremost ruler across the Mediterranean to the monsoon-soaked inland of India. Chapter by chapter, the reader learns how Alexander motivated infantry soldiers and generals alike.

Arguably the world's first multiculturalist and unparalleled military and political strategist, Alexander found ways to have the men who fought with him to rise to heights greater than would seem possible. Foreman leaves no stone unturned as she details the upheavals in the ranks, events back home in Greece, Alexander's questionable marriage to Roxanne and his dubious connection with Hephaestion.

Astonishingly beautiful pictures accentuate this tale of one of the world's greatest leaders. It's an easy read, very informative and without a doubt it makes for either a coffee table book or a personal library keeper.

I have been studying/collecting books on Alexander for many years and this one ranks up there as one of my favorites. I was not sure what to expect from this book since there were no customer reviews so I took a chance and got lucky. The book is not too thick and is divided into interesting chapters/topics. Most of the information covered is standard Alexander lore but hidden throughout are tasty nuggets of little known facts about Alexander and his life. Details on military exploits and the battles seems a bit light but I do not think that the author planned to cover these like a military textbook. One can always pick up Green's classic or many other options for these details.

What really makes this book stand out are the photos. This book is PACKED full of gorgeous photographs and illustrations that I have never seen before in any book on Alexander. Due to the current situation in the Middle East few Westerners will ever see the sites of Persia and Afghanistan. This book gives one the chance to catch a glimpse of the lands Alexander added to his kingdom. I have been to Greece a few times and the pictures made me long for another trip to the Agean in the near future. The only negative I can find with the book is the inclusion of a comment/sticker from Oliver Stone. Doing a movie on Alexander does not make one an expert. I am sure this was done because of his upcoming movie on Alexander the Great. Hollywood has already ruined a classic tale with "Troy". Let us hope that Stone's production will not repeat this. Buy this Book!

Firstly, you should be clear about what you're buying here: as the reviewer below has said, this is not either a scholarly work or even a full biography of Alexander (if you want the latter, try Robin Lane Fox), but what it is is a stunning collection of photos and visual images, many of which I hadn't seen before, of Alexander and his world. So if you've read the biographies and histories (or even Mary Renault!) and want to be able to picture the places where Alexander (possibly?) grew up and lived, then this is a superb addition to the standard literature.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice pictures shame about the rest
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 3, 2005
I bought this book as I have done a lot of research into Alexander the Great, and as there are limited original sources its hard to find a new angle. I had read a review of this book and as I've always liked coffee table books to flick through from time to time I purchased with the aim of seeing lots of images, paintings etc.. The first thing that disappointed me was that the front cover had a great big sticker promoting Oliver Stone's movie and when I tried to pull it off it ripped the cover. The second thing is the writing inside, for those of you who were brought in up in the UK its like a Ladybird guide to Alexander. For those of you who don't know Ladybird books they were great little books for teaching kids around 10 about history. Or in other words the text is really not aimed at any serious scholar or at providing any analysis or insight so frankly I think the author would have been better advised to fill it up with more pictures. As for the pictures there are some lovely shots of paintings, scenery and sculptures, which really allow you to see something of what the elusive Alexander might have looked like. So as a coffee table experience the book does work, I would however take marks off for the price, which is quite steep given the relatively small number of pages, and the text which was not inspiring and took up too much place. On the other hand this is the only book I have seen that attempts to capture images on the subject in one place. To anyone who wants to capture the excitement of the Alexander adventure I would still recommend Michael Wood's book/documentary series from the BBC which really gave a feel for what it might have been like.
