This is a wonderful biography of Alexander the Great for children. It is clear, easy to read and facinating from page 1 right up to the end of the book. It covers the story of the great King of Macedonia from his babyhood right up to his death. Alexander was powerful and successful for 12 years but pressed on with little rhyme or reason at the end. Things just started to fall apart as easily as they had built up. The book also discusses the different ethnic groups and empires at the time. The author provide the reader with a full picture of who the Macedonian and Greeks were as well as the who the people they conquered were. Highly recommened and many young adults will enjoy it.

This is a very good version of the story of Alexander the Great. It was a nicely balanced mix of the famous stories from his life, and the obscure stories that teachers generally won't even mention. History books and summaries that are readable to younger ages usually only focus on all the amazing things Alexander the Great did, but this book also covers the mistakes. This is nice because it teaches you a lot more about what kind of man he was, and why he went on to do what he did. Details like how he was at the front of the line during every battle he was in. How he could wipe out entire cities in his rage, but loved his mother and wrote to her regularly during his expedition. This book covers the best and worst times that are necessary to having a good general knowledge of Alexander's life.

Because this book is written so well I would advise to anyone who is interested in knowing more about Alexander the Great. But, in terms of reading difficulty, it's probably best for a 10-13 year-old reader.

This is an ok rendition of Alexander's life for a younger reader. It avoids the gore that could have been described about some of Alexander's battles. One thing that I didn't like were some references to other historical figures without mentioning who they were. Author assumed that a person should know Hitler, Napoleon and a few others but for a younger person this would be useless. As to an adult, if the adult didn't want to go into great detail into Alexander's life and miss the details of his great battles then this would be ok but the adult would be missing a lot. For an adult it is a quick read.

My son wanted to do a school report on Alexander the Great and we needed suitable material. This turned out to be the perfect source for a 9 year old.
