About Alexandra Lehmann
"Sophie Scholl and Fritz Hartnagel's true story adds an important perspective to German Resistance history. Without Fritz's first hand testimony about what he experienced on the Eastern and Western fronts, Sophie may not have been able to act as boldly as she did. I've dedicated over ten years to researching and writing this story. By being fluent (in German), I was able to translate Fritz's letters into English for the first time. I hope that my readers will gain a new understanding about Sophie Scholl's motivation and the German Army's role in World War II. Above all, however, theirs is a timeless love story about two brave individuals caught on opposite sides of war." - Alexandra Lehmann

Blog postAppropriating World War II Language for 2018 U.S. Mid Term Elections We need a leader, not a movement. – Candidate for Governor of the State of Connecticut When I began reading Sophie Scholl’s story to audiences during my book tour this year, I wanted to educate people about using the word”resistance” to describe opposition to the current political landscape. After one of my readings, however, another writer educated me as to the roles that we have as writers about nonfiction subjects.2 years ago Read more

With You There Is Light: Based on the True Story about Sophie Scholl and Fritz Hartnagel

$6.99
As a founding member of the White Rose student resistance in Munich during World War II, Sophie Scholl helped write, produce and distribute thousands of anti-Nazi leaflets. Her boyfriend, Captain Fritz Hartnagel, was forced to pledge the Hitler Oath and serve in his army. Officer Hartnagel wrote to his girlfriend about his witness of SS and army atrocities. Both Fritz and Sophie were changed by their correspondence, translated here into English for the first time. Their relationship demonstrates the moral complexity of living in a totalitarian society, and is ultimately a timeless love story.
