Through countless interviews with Hogue, Kalil garnered insight into Hogue's life and art philosophies and was better able to understand Hogue both as a man and an artist. Her extensive use of Hogue's quotes allow the reader to enter Hogue's mind and better appreciate his creative process. While many of Hogue's iconic images will be familiar, others will surprise and elicit new emotions. Alexandre Hogue an American Visionary shows Hogue's artistic diversity and releases him from the constraining labels of "dust bowl artist" or "regionalist painter." This book is clearly a testament to Kalil's determination to re-invigorate Alexanre Hogue's status as a great artist. It is a must buy for any connoisseur of American art.
