Dummit and Foote is the Better Text

According to other reviewers, Dummit and Foote is dumbed down and easier to read, whereas Artin is for the very elite. The simple fact is that "easier to read" means the book is better. Artin is stenographic in brevity. If you cannot figure something out on your own, Artin will not help you. You will need your instructor or a better book to explain it. And later, when you have finished a semester or two of algebra but you need to recall whether a certain group has normal subgroups or how to prove some boring, tedious thing about rings, Artin will have your question listed as an exercise (completely useless to you, as always). Dummit and Foote will have the proof you need or an example very similar worked in full, concrete detail. Perhaps that is dumbed down, but it's useful and it's better. If you didn't need help, you would not have referred to a book at all.

Many excellent texts on abstract algebra exist. I would recommend Artin to an absolute beginner however along with Pinter, or Saracino, or Fraleigh or Herstein's Abstract Algebra (Herstein's Topics in Algebra is for the more adventurous with a strong background in proofs).

Incredibly insightful, deliberately disorganized text

I wish to first point out that several positive reviewers argue that the strength of the book is what it forces you to look for and that if you cannot find the missing puzzle pieces you must be mathematically weak or studying poorly. The argument seems to be that the book's strength lies in that which is omitted.

This is a silly argument, but it is telling of the pedagogical philosophy and communication bias in the book. The purpose of a text book is to communicate, but Artin's lazy stream-of-consciousness style will leave many out in the cold.

Indeed, the book does seem to be written for those who do not need it, an enormous sequence of casual asides to a lost conversation between students already versed in the field and a professor intent on communicating in fits and starts, short growls and nods.

As one reviewer noted, the text derives from Artin's lecture notes. This is not uncommon, but the book shows little evidence of any thought put into making the book useful as a reference. Rather it has many gaps both large and small. It is what one might expect from putting in the least amount of editorial work and hastily typesetting the notes for publication.

In terms of original content, Artin provides important insights. Still, while I can imagine thinking "what does Artin have to say about (blank)", I cannot imagine bothering to search a book so deliberately and thoroughly written to make the reader ask and answer their own questions.

Lack of Explanation and overall disappointing

Frankly, if you use this book, it will be slow going. There is so much to fill in between what Artin covers and what you need to learn to understand the material. I often find myself completely lost in this text (and so do many of the other students in my class). The text and proofs seem to have been trimmed down to the bare minimum, at the cost of the user's understanding. Unlike many texts, in this text you have to understand nearly everything before moving on because nothing is explained or discussed twice (so if you don't like the way it is explained the first time in the text, you are in trouble because that will be your only explanation). Examples are difficult to find -- they are literally within the text, often not even beginning a new paragraph when doing an example. That is, the examples are difficult to find IF there are even examples (there are often times where an example would be extremely useful, but Artin does not provide one, or if he does, glosses over it with little detail). I've leaned a lot on the internet and class notes to get me through my year-long abstract algebra course. Perhaps my mind just isn't meant for abstract algebra, but this is the only math book that I always have difficulties finding answers to my questions and rarely can follow, even after multiple readings. A remark on the problems -- the problems occasionally use terms that the book never even explains or even mentions (leaving you even more confused).

This book is certainly NOT suitable for self-study (besides the first 2-3 chapters), unless you already have a good base in the material, in which case you probably want to get a more advanced text anyways. If you are considering using this book for a course, please look elsewhere for the sake of your students or at least have a second book to reference students to.

Some other students have found Dummit & Foote, "Abstract Algebra," useful and have used it in conjunction with Artin in our course. (Somewhat ironic...Dummit/Foote is the text for the graduate course at the U of MN, yet it goes into more explanation and is better organized than this text, which is used for the U of MN undergraduate course.)
