I am glad that this original from PUP is reprinted. It covers a bit more than the van der Waerden's "Einfuerung in die algebraische geometrie" in the same old style. A readable equivalent in modern language is the Shafarevich's "basic AG". These books are written for the mythical "advanced undergraduate", i.e. not for the innocents! Usually books from PUP or from the series "Grundlehren" offer introductions to various branches of mathematics only to mature readers. If anything, you need to know already what they write about. The Hartshorne's AG in the "graduate texts" series of Springer is a modern thorough hard to read introduction, it covers also about the same range of topics.

Well the good thing with old texts like this one is that they are more pictorial, closer to the intuition, although one has to put up with old terminologies. The best compromise I found so far is the "Lectures on curves, surfaces and projective varieties" from the EMS; however, the content is a bit less extensive and for true beginners, it is advisable to acquire the knowledge given in the book "Lezioni di geometria analitica e proiettiva" by the same authors (the authors also give some English references for the equivalent content).

I bought this book because I want and need to know about this subject.
I have come to really dislike this book and this author, because
although some of the information I want is here, it is presented so badly, it is very hard work to get it. It is mathematics authorship like this that gives math a bad name.
This text was written in the '50's before the Deligne breakthroughs in this area and the later concentration on Calabi-Yau Algebraic varieties
in the area of mirror symmetry. He uses K for R ( real) and KP_n
for projective spaces, but mostly he is just sloppy about notation for sums and even vectors. His definitions always seem to leave me wondering what exactly he means. Mostly he leaves me wanting a book to explain his book. As a cheap starting place for Algebraic Geometry, you may want to pass this one up until you read something better?
