From the Author

Alice Mongoose and Alistair Rat are back! A new generation of children in Hawaii and beyond will be able to enjoy  the gentle humor, practical life lessons, and charming illustrations of Mary Pfaff, known in her day as "The Beatrix Potter of Hawaii."
Ten percent of the profits from this special edition will be donated to THREE RING RANCH, Hawaii's only fully-accredited, USDA-licensed, exotic animal sanctuary.

From the Inside Flap

With her hatbox and steamer trunk all packed and her employment letter in hand, Alice Mongoose was looking forward to her first grownup job on a Hamakua sugar plantation. Imagine her dismay when, on the voyage over from her home in India, she learned what her job really entailed--to kill rats in order to protect the sugar cane fields!

When her ship disembarks, Alice collects her effects and explores Hawaii's Hamakua Coast on her own. Soon she meets a dapper little fellow, whose name is Alistair, and who happens to be a rat. Alistair becomes Alice's greatest friend in her new Hawaiian home.

The Alice Mongoose and Alistair Rat stories are classic tales of adventure, resilience, and friendship, beloved to this day by children of all ages.

Very gentle story, suitable for all ages. Lovely illustrations, definitely in the style of Beatrix Potter. Looking forward to the others being released on Kindle. Plan to share this one with my grandchildren.

I received this book from the author/publisher in exchange of an honest review.

3.5 stars. I did like the premise of the book, and the idea. But it felt a bit short. Like this is just part 1 of a bigger book, instead of a separate book in a series. We were just getting to the part where Alice arrives at Hawaii, finds a home, and a friend and then, done. Just like that.

The book has promise though, I can see this become a long series with stories of Alice, her job (if she still has that one in the later books), and her unlikely friendship with a certain animal.

I do wonder, why didn't Alice ask what the job was about? Why did she (and her parents for that matter) just let her board a ship? Which also brings to me, there are humans? (Since that pair of boots and how big they were in correlation with Alice seemed to hint at that.)

The art is pretty great, I liked it. I liked how the characters were drawn, how the backgrounds were done. It is quite colourful, and I am sure kids will like it.

Would I recommend this book? Yes. I would. I do hope there will be more books that continue this story, let us know more about Alice and her world.

I received this book free for my honest review. Alice Mongoose and Alistair Rat in Hawaii is a cute story about a young lady mongoose that has decided to be on her own. The book takes you through her journey into her adult life, future job and home with an unlikely new friend. This story is written in the style of some classic tales by Beatrix Potter, Arnold Lobel, and Jan Brett. The artwork is very well done as it is as essential to the story as the words themselves. (Spoiler alert) I do have a complaint in that it is a story for children and it references the mongoose’s new job is to “kill” the rats. It could have been written to say, run them off or make a lot of noise when she sees the rats. It is because of this that I can not recommend this book for young children.
