The first three movies of the Alien franchise are directed by some of the best directors in the business. Ridley Scott, James Cameron, and now David Fincher, who all bring their own kind of strengths to the table. In Alien, it was minimalism and letting the suspense build without showing the aliens too much. Letting the tension build up and the reveal was shocking, and the story was good enough. Aliens, it's all about creature FX and action, which is right up James Cameron's alley and he did an exceptional job. So then to come to Fincher, who has strengths but none quite as obvious as the previous two as it regards the Alien movies.Alien 3 is a good movie, but it's not great. It's a typical case of where the quality suffers because of the films before it, otherwise this may as well have been another classic movie. Ripley is stuck in an all-male prison full of mostly spiritual dudes who are settled into their lives in prison. The leader of them, attempts to constantly use his religion to both intimidate and instill confidence in those around him. As the story progresses, there are many attempts to flesh out the lore of the Alien universe. Ripley is faced with something we haven't seen before, and the Alien has begun to evolve yet again into a new form we have not yet seen. The prisoners are reluctant to fight at first, but once the plan starts to come together after they start losing some of their own, the movie takes off.I can't say the Director's Cut is any better than the theatrical, but this movie has some great shots and moments that are often used when referencing this series. It definitely pales in comparison to the first two films, but the last 30 minutes or so are action packed unlike the previous films. I particularly love the way they trap the alien at the end, as it seems to have a few references to Star Wars lore with how the situation is shot/handled. Overall, it's a good Blu-ray release for the collection and to complete the Alien franchise on my shelf. This did not come with a digital copy.

WITH NO SPOILERS, I CAN SAY THE IS A FINE ADDITION TO THE SERIES. MANY REVIEWS BECAME DISAPPOINTED ☹️ AS THERE WAS NOT NONE STOP ✋ ACTION, EVERY SECOND , THAT ALIENS HAD. THIS IS A MUCH MORE COGNITIVE FILM AND A DEEPER EXPLORATION OF RIPLEY AND HER INTERNAL EMOTIONS AND FEELING. CHARLES DANCE, AND ABOVE ALL CHARLES S . DUTTON,
STOLE THE SHOW. THESE OTHER SUPPORTING ACTORS, THE INMATES WERE SUPERB.💥⭐️ THIS IS A FINE INTERPRETATION OF THE THIRD FILM IN THE SERIES, VERY STRONG 👍. MANY REVIEWERS NEEDED THEIR ACTION SHOT EVERY SECOND AS IN ALIENS. THIS WAS A MORE COGNITIVE, THINKING PERSON’S MOVIE . OF COURSE THERE IS STILL MORE ACTION THAN IS NECESSARY, BUT EXPLORES RIPLEY AND HER PERSONALITY AND HOW SHE CAME TO BECOME INVOLVED IN THIS BIG MESS. CHARLES DANCE AS THE DOCTOR IS MAGNIFICENT AND CHARLES S. DUTTON, RAN AWAY WITH THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION. YOU MIGHT ENJOY THE SEQUEL TO NUMBER THREE, AS THERE IS MUCH MORE ACTION AND FINALITY COMES TO THE FOUR MOVIES. THE VENUE IN OUR FILM TAKES PLACE ON A SUPER MAX PRISON FACILITY DEEP IN SPACE WHERE RIPLEY AND HER SHIP WAS DRIFTING TOWARDS AND WAS AWAITING PASSAGE BACK TO EARTH. A LITTLE THINKING CAN BE GOOD FOR THE LITTLE GREY CELLS, MON AMI, AS MSSR. HERCULES 👍 POIROT SAYS. BUT, THIS HAS ITS VISCERAL MOMENTS ALSO.

I forgot I rented this movie. It's OK, definitely a good sequel. Very weird but I enjoyed it. If you like the Aliens series it's worth a watch.

The Assembly Cut, or special edition, version of Alien 3 is the one to watch. It provides better motivation for characters, adds extra dimensions to the film, and is a superior version.
That said, Alien 3 is still a very depressing film. Looks great, but nothing good happens to these prisoners, and there is little joviality in the film. I like the slow burn, but it is the antithesis of Aliens. No guns, slow methodical pacing, no soldiers. it's really a character study, with some religion, survivor remorse sprinkled in.
The mood is a throwback to the 1st film but with less suspense or horror. It's still a very good film, but don't expect action. This is probably the last good Alien film. 4th was a silly enjoyable action flick but superficial. AVPs were the same and unremarkable. Prometheus and Covenant had the stupidest space people, and CGI action.

Combo of the first two movies. Less aliens and no real weapons. It works but you can tell Ripley is tired of this.

No amount of editing can cover up the fact that Alien 3 committed a sequel sin by undoing all the great things achieved by the characters at the climax of the previous film. You can tear your character/s back down from a big win (Rocky did it 6 times), but you can't go from "I love you Rocky!" straight to, "Can you believe it Mick? She dumped me!" Watch the original Karate Kid 1 & 2 in order if you don't believe me, or Star Trek III, which literally reverses the beautiful, altruistic theme of Wrath of Khan (still love those films though). What I'm saying is, killing off Newt and Hicks was the wrong way to go, and the franchise never fully recovered from losing those valuable additions.
THAT SAID, Alien 3 the Special Edition (aka Assembly Cut) works better than the theatrical cut in terms of simply telling a story about finding yourself in hell, and struggling for redemption. The new version adds about 30 minutes of new footage, allowing all of the characters to grow and get fleshed out a bit more - especially Paul McGann's, who went from being background noise to a major player - and although the same problems still exist (less-than-visionary special fx, and a K-9-looking Alien "twist", for example), this version feels more like the first one, where the soul-less corporation is relentlessly pursuing a monstrous goal at the expense of any innocents who get in the way. In that sense, while never fully explained how it happened, its at least more believable that the company could've acted behind Ripley's back to cause the events that led up to Alien 3. Ripley's finale in this version is much more graceful and meaningful in my opinion; it really sells the notion that the company is the real terror, and an act of true selflessness the great redeemer. Is it still a buzz-kill after Aliens? Yeah, but the Special Edition is a more poignant buzz-kill.
Will Alien 3 (and Alien Resurrection) become an extended dream sequence in Neil Blomkamp's upcoming "alternate sequel" to Cameron's Aliens? I don't know. After Elysium and Chappie, I'm not getting my hopes too high, but H.R. Gieger created a great movie monster, Ridley Scott made sure it inhabited an utterly believable future, and Sigourney Weaver proved that she's a versatile and utterly watchable actress. James Cameron took the next logical step and fleshed out Ellen Ripley's character, giving her - and the audience - a reason to care; he also evolved the genre to include pulse-pounding action. We all wanted the franchise to take another logical step after that, but for whatever reasons, the real-life company (20th Century Fox) pushed Brandywine producers into rushing the product, and retreading the same kind of stomping ground as the original.
Blomkamp is bringing back Ripley and Dwayne Hicks (and one would assume a now matured Newt) to reboot the franchise. I'm cautiously optimistic for a hit, and utterly certain that Aliens 2 or Alien 5 (Alien: Redacted?) or whatever they call it, will become another cult classic if nothing else. If you're watching an Alien marathon, and have to choose between the Theatrical or Assembly cut of Alien 3, I'd suggest the latter for pure story and character. Like the Daredevil Director's Cut, it can't save the piece from being slightly off the mark, but it helps flesh out the story tremendously, and really sets the stage for Alien Resurrection. I didn't like Alien 3 at all until the Special Edition. Now I know Neil Blomkamp has his work cut out for him. Can't wait to see where Ripley ends up next!

Alien 3 from ''the best of the bad to "the worst of the good Alien movies...and thats a good thing!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on July 22, 2020
David Fincher’s first film and very nearly his last! He had inherited the mother of all poisoned chalices, a film the had already lost two directors. But if Fox thought they had a suggestible director who’d do as he was told, they were sorely mistaken; he clashed repeatedly with producers, insisting on using his own ideas and then he walked away, as Fox demanded a barrage of reshoots following a screening of Alien 3‘s rough cut. Nearly leaving the film industry altogether, (he didn’t return until he made Seven).
The theatrical version of Alien 3, released in 1992, contained numerous changes that were forced on Fincher during its chaotic shoot, with several lengthy sequences either cut out or reshot. The atmosphere is downbeat and gothic, the pace - compared to the relentless Aliens - measured and brooding. Fincher’s aim is, clearly, to bring a sense of menace to the franchise’s monster again, while at the same time casting Ripley in a different light: as a weary, aging warrior whose nemesis has pursued her halfway across space.Inevitably, perhaps, Fincher was only partly successful; at the very least, he’s succeeded in making something more intelligent and layered than your average horror sequel. But Alien 3 is also a muddle, both in its pacing and in its set-pieces - particularly the protracted final third, where it’s seldomly clear who’s standing where in relation to whom. The Assembly Cut does, however, add several scenes which restore some of the clarity to Fincher’s vision, as well as giving some characters - who were almost reduced to cameos in the theatrical cut - more to do. In the theatrical cut, Paul McGann has what amounts to a handful of scenes as the psychopathic inmate, Golic. In the restored edit, McGann is far more involved. Aside from major changes which would be spoilers, the theatrical cut also removed numerous dialogue scenes which went a long way to help audiences distinguish between all the shaven-headed inmates. All told, the Assembly Cut runs a shade over 30 minutes longer than the theatrical version, which provides some indication as to just how much extensively Alien 3’s character moments were chopped down.
Even in its re-edited Assembly Cut. Alien 3 is far from a perfect film. For one thing, it can’t reverse some of the weird decisions made during filming; Compared to the messy, curtailed theatrical release, the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 is undoubtedly the better one: a clearer expression of Fincher’s original intentions, and a more coherent rendering of a script that was flawed to begin with some of the criticisms rightly levelled at the movie still apply; not the least that it immediately undercuts the sense of hope they brought to Aliens’ conclusion. But given the genius of that James Cameron film, following it was always a thankless task, although I do recall Dark Horse comics making a better fist of it in the 1980's.
I had always been intrigued at the prospect of a directors cut of Alien 3 and revising the story via the directors cut did make me feel that the movie is better than you might remember from its theatrical incarnation.
This much longer version than the theatrical cut and to my mind largely manages to save the movie; It's not that the assembly cut of Alien³ is somehow a fundamentally different movie than the theatrical cut. It's the same movie done much, much better. The assembly cut, without quite erasing the reality that we're watching different screenplay drafts battle for prominence, makes a great deal more sense of the material.
It's enough to push it from being "the best of the bad Alien movies" to "the worst of the good Alien movies." And as good as good Aliens are, that's still a pretty decent thing to be. 7/10

Completely different film to the theatrical version
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on November 22, 2020
The special assembly cut version on this DVD is the one to watch. It is much better than the original theatrical version, and is a completely different film, with more story to it. This is the version that should have been released back in 1992, and it would have got more favorable reviews and taken more at the box office in the USA where it initially failed. There is also a bonus disc on the making of Alien 3 which is great too.

The Theatrical Edition on the disk is the best
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on December 12, 2020
There are two versions on one disk, the Theatrical Edition which is the one we've all seen on TV and is great, and the Special Edition which I think is a directors cut which has been messed about with, and has extra scenes in it and some other scenes edited out and I don't like it as much.

Very underrated alien film
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on June 21, 2022
Watched this recently and it's a very underrated alien film. A bit slower paced as I watched the director's cut but it has some good moments. Picture on the Blu-ray is pretty good as well and so is the sound. Overall very happy with my purchase.
