I found the Alien3 SE to be more relatable and the social structure in the prison to be very understandable, whereas before the characters seemed ham-handedly shoved together with no organic development of conflicts and resolutions. In this sense, it reminded me a lot of Jim Cameron's "The Abyss" theatrical release versus the far superior Director's Cut... the story and characters come together (and fall apart) in a far more richly-done story.
A spoiler that isn't really a spoiler, just a heads-up: the origin of the Alien's spread on the prison/mining planet is changed in a significant manner. Watch for it!
STOLE THE SHOW. THESE OTHER SUPPORTING ACTORS, THE INMATES WERE SUPERB.💥⭐️ THIS IS A FINE INTERPRETATION OF THE THIRD FILM IN THE SERIES, VERY STRONG 👍. MANY REVIEWERS NEEDED THEIR ACTION SHOT EVERY SECOND AS IN ALIENS. THIS WAS A MORE COGNITIVE, THINKING PERSON’S MOVIE . OF COURSE THERE IS STILL MORE ACTION THAN IS NECESSARY, BUT EXPLORES RIPLEY AND HER PERSONALITY AND HOW SHE CAME TO BECOME INVOLVED IN THIS BIG MESS. CHARLES DANCE AS THE DOCTOR IS MAGNIFICENT AND CHARLES S. DUTTON, RAN AWAY WITH THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION. YOU MIGHT ENJOY THE SEQUEL TO NUMBER THREE, AS THERE IS MUCH MORE ACTION AND FINALITY COMES TO THE FOUR MOVIES. THE VENUE IN OUR FILM TAKES PLACE ON A SUPER MAX PRISON FACILITY DEEP IN SPACE WHERE RIPLEY AND HER SHIP WAS DRIFTING TOWARDS AND WAS AWAITING PASSAGE BACK TO EARTH. A LITTLE THINKING CAN BE GOOD FOR THE LITTLE GREY CELLS, MON AMI, AS MSSR. HERCULES 👍 POIROT SAYS. BUT, THIS HAS ITS VISCERAL MOMENTS ALSO.
That said, Alien 3 is still a very depressing film. Looks great, but nothing good happens to these prisoners, and there is little joviality in the film. I like the slow burn, but it is the antithesis of Aliens. No guns, slow methodical pacing, no soldiers. it's really a character study, with some religion, survivor remorse sprinkled in.
The mood is a throwback to the 1st film but with less suspense or horror. It's still a very good film, but don't expect action. This is probably the last good Alien film. 4th was a silly enjoyable action flick but superficial. AVPs were the same and unremarkable. Prometheus and Covenant had the stupidest space people, and CGI action.
What I mean is, I believe the queen alien reveal should've been reserved for the 3rd movie. Instead what we get is a version of the xenomorph that's part alien and part dog. It still very much resembles the original xenomorph but seems to favor crawling on all fours instead of the more humanoid xenomorphs from the previous film that actually stood up on their hind legs. It's somewhat of a subtile difference but you can tell it was intentional and Ripley even has a line in the movie where she says it's different than the ones she saw before.
Anyways, the main problem with this movie is the story. It was just a bad script, there's no nice way of putting it. In my opinion though, it's somewhat saved by having some great actors in the film. Saved about as much as possible given what they had to work with. I think the worst aspect of the script is, spoilers of course, all the characters from the previous film die including Ripley. While I agree it was a good idea to give the Alien movies closure in the 3rd act, I don't think this was the right way of doing it.
The alien/xenomorph concept was such a cool idea. I can't blame anyone for wanting to make more movies. But it's really not worth it if it isn't executed well. Ideally, I believe what they should've done was end the 2nd movie on a cliffhanger where the queen alien was never revealed and in the 3rd movie maybe there would be a final mission to find the source of the aliens or something. And then after that they could crank out the Alien vs. Predator movies or something to keep the narrative interesting.
In the end I don't believe this movie was as bad as even the director claims it to be. It would be hard to follow up a 2nd movie where they pretty much laid out all of the cards prematurely. There was some good acting, a little bit of bad writing and some sad plot twists but it does do what the 3rd movie should've set out to do and give the story closure. Of course this is Hollywood and they couldn't leave it alone so they made a 4th one as well but that's another story....
