Maybe at some point I'll finish "Alien:Covenant 2" (65% in so far) and do an addendum to my review, but it's just awful, and I just got Cold Forge, so I'm moving over to that. This basically reads like a pulp spy thriller that was written for an anime screenplay. The Alien:Covenant connection is superficial at best. One chapter is solely about the requirements of a Covenant security officer. And when the security chief starts working with the new subordinate he makes sexual jokes to her almost immediately, which she seems to enjoy, implying that in 100 years we will have culturally reverted to the 1950s. And of course we get strippers in it at some point. We do get a little bit of Daniels, but she and her husband talk like they're Law and Order detectives, completely out of character. Weyland and David are fleetingly mentioned. Haven't seen Vickers name at all so far. Oh, and by the way, Weyland-Yutani offices are attacked by ninjas at one point. Ninjas. And the main antagonist is a man who has dreams that the author implies are of Aliens. Despite the fact that this man doesn't understand what the dreams are or mean, it somehow inspires a cult of followers willing to give their lives for him (!?!) I've read a lot of Alien novels, and I love Alan Dean Foster, but I just can't keep going with this.

I've been a fan of the Alien films for a long time. I didn't have the opportunity to see Alien Covenant in theaters, but have the film on Blu Ray, though I haven't seen it yet. I decided to wait until the prequel Book was published and read it and the film novelization before watching the movie. It is unusual that the prequel book, which should've been published first, was actually last.
There are no monsters in this book, as it is a tale of corporate espionage regarding the mission of the colony ship Covenant. The intrigue is well written and interesting, though not all questions are answered. Weyland -Yutani is not quite the corporate powerhouse in this book, though they are a conglomerate. The head Hideo Yutani is interesting. The organization that opposes him, the Earth Savers has a "prophet" who seemingly knows what monsters like in the dark. His nightmares have given the Earth Savers fuel for their fire. This plot point is similar to one in an earlier book, Alien Sea of Shadows. Please note: Spoilers.
Duncan Fields, the prophet, seems to have an empathetic link to the Alien warriors, similar to Ripley's descendant in Sea of Shadows. He had the ability to see through the Alien warriors eyes. Duncan Fields seems to have this ability as well, though the background is not explained fully. Still a great read. I read this book using Immersion Reading. Narrator Tom Taylorson, is excellent, with a beautiful, clear voice and is gifted with accents. It was definitely a highlight to hear this book as well as read it. Worth your time.

An interesting (albeit unsatisfying) take on the events preceeding Alien Covenant. Focusing on religious fanaticism and industrial espionage, Foster does his best to deliver a good suspense/thriller devoid of the xenomorph. While I personally would've preferred an account describing the events that took place on board the juggernaut (in regards to David and Elizabeth), Foster takes what he's given, and gets the job done.
The plot is simple enough. A group of unknown fanatics fight to stop the covenant from being launched, out of fear that mankind's venture into space will unearth evil things that may return to destroy humanity, once they become aware that we exist. Several character from the film are featured in the book, with some finally getting a touch of backstory and personality, such as Branson.
The main issue this book creates is that none of the events described in it can be mentioned in the film (as the film was made first). Had the film alluded to possible sabotage when the characters were rousted awake and killed at the beginning of the film, the book may have fit. As it stands, there are all these kidnappings, gunfights and sabotage both on and off the covenant in the book, and no mention of any of it in the film. It just makes the movie feel weird.
All in all, it's an interesting read. It's not by any means the worst book in the Alien Universe, but it's not the best either. Although, there is no doubt in my mind that for what it became, it was done as well as it could be; and that's because it was written by Foster.

The only thing this book has in common with the alien series is the title.

The only thing that this book has in common with the Alien series, is the title. Very disappointing. Bog standard story line, mission to outer space, hampered by threats to blow up the ship. Think that about covers the story line and book. In short watch the paint dry on the wall and you will get the same effect as reading the book.

Good intro to the Covenant crew, background on the main characters etc. Not a thrilling book but it's set the stage nicely for Covenant

A little shorter than I expected, but very enjoyable. I did notice a couple of plot holes, but nothing too distracting.
