Note to customers: Sega no longer supports the online component of this game. Now that Sega has proven it can bring the console to the Internet for online gaming, the company's working to stay in front of the pack. Not only can you form teams over the Internet in this human vs. alien war, you can also play with or against players who are operating networked coin-op arcade machines. By the time the game is fully finished, Sega says players will be able to communicate via real-time voice chat during gameplay. You can choose to operate the alien biomech units against the humans, or you can defend earth as a tank commander in one of three different styles of real-world tanks--the M1A1 Abrams, Merkava, and the M-109. --Porter B. Hall

It gets irritating getting killed every few minutes, as most confrontations between you and opponents result in little more than trigger-happy point-blank standoffs. The strategy involved in this game is minimal because the tanks are so slow you can't really maneuver around once an enemy bears down on you. And the enemies often sneak up from seemingly nowhere to kill you in less than a handful of shots. Then you die... again... and again... until you run out of continues.
The game engine is actually fairly solid. Accurate control, rich graphics, ability to level surroundings & structures. It just displays very little hallmarks of a game that you will want to come back to. The online mode helps, but it too will get just as boring and tedious as the 1-player mode.
If you are in the mood for a solid, arcade-like, shallow tank game, then by all means fire away. Just be warned that boredom might ensue sooner than you think.
And if you're wondering, the microphone is a funny little pack that plugs into one of the VMU ports, not any sort of headset or ear-piece.
Also, the microphone works great. As long as everybody talks loud enough, you can understand everything clearly. Its easier than typing, and quiker, and you don't have to stop playing to do it.
The servers were amazingly fast. I played the game online, of course, and did not notice any lag what-so-ever. This could be becuase the game has only been out for 1 day, so not too many people have it, but it still worked great. The only gripe I had with online play is that it does not let you choose the 2nd dial-up account, its default is the first dail-up account. So you can't choose a differant one like you can in nfl2k1 and Q3.
There is no real strategy involved. You either blow the enemy up, or get yourself blown up. The cumpter controled characters are pretty good at finding you, so trying to hid is futile!
Don't fall in love with the fact that you can fight as an alien. There are only 3 alien vechiles, and their weaponry is basicly the same. The only differenes is how fast the vechicles are able to drive.
If you want a sega game that is like a PC shooter, then get Spawn instead.
