Audible is bringing William Gibson’s uncovered Alien III script to life in audio for the first time, to mark the 40th Anniversary of the birth of the Alien franchise.
Alongside a full cast, Michael Biehn and Lance Henriksen reprise their iconic roles as Corporal Hicks and Bishop from the 1986 film Aliens.
Father of cyberpunk William Gibson’s original script for Alien III, written in 1987 as a sequel to Aliens, never made it to our screens, although it went on to achieve cult status among fans as the third instalment that might have been after being leaked online.
This terrifying, cinematic multicast dramatisation - directed by the multi-award-winning Dirk Maggs - is the chance to experience William Gibson’s untold story and its terrifying, claustrophobic and dark encounters between humans and aliens, as a completely immersive audio experience.
The story begins with the Sulaco on its return journey from LV-426. On board the military ship are the cryogenically frozen skeleton crew of that film’s survivors: Ripley, Hicks, Newt and Bishop.
We travel aboard and hear an alarm blare. Our heroes are no longer alone....
Starring: Tom Alexander, Barbara Barnes, Michael Biehn, Cliff Chapman, Samantha Coughlan, Ben Cura, Dar Dash, Harry Ditson, Mairead Doherty, Lance Henriksen, Graham Hoadly, Lorelei King, Laurel Lefkow, Martin McDougall, Sarah Pitard, Michael Roberts, David Seddon, Andrew James Spooner, Siri Steinmo, Dai Tabuchi, Keith Wickham, Rebecca Yeo.

So what is this exactly? It's an unused screen play for Alien 3, which was later scrapped for the one we know today. The story is much different and there's a lot less Ripley and a lot more Bishop, Hicks is there too but in a smaller role. We learn of a competing group of nations called the CPP as well as expanding the ideas of Weyland-Yutanis goals from the previous films. We learn about how even dead and lifeless Alien DNA can adapt and survive when introduced to life forms, I won't spoil it but it resulted in a pretty cool scene. I felt like some of the ideas and themes in this script were later taken and used for Alien: Resurrection and Prometheus as there is Alien cloning and evolutions of how the Xenomorph is born.
I really liked the art and the concept was good but I could see why this script was scrapped. Writing out Ripley to me was a mistake since she was the central figure in all of the movies. The alien concepts here were great in my opinion and did something different from the previous 2 movies but felt closer to the theme of the original Alien. There are no Marines, just a group of people on a space station caught in the line of fire between Weyland-Yutani's and the CPP's race for a biological weapon and the Xenomorph. Of course there are still themes of conspiracy but Ripley doesn't have her epic moment where she sacrifices herself but we get some closure on Newt and Bishop which is good.
I still hold the original Alien comics from the 80s in high regards and my bias sides with those. I loved that this was created though and can't thank Dark horse enough for giving us a bit of a What If? moment where we can see just how different Alien 3 could have been. It's also a beautiful hard cover that feels nice in your hands with excellent print quality. There's also a excerpt from the writer of the script as well as some concept art in the back of the book.
Also I've been having issues with Amazon lately, they shipped the book with bent edges on the hardcover and some very light scarring on the cover as well. I didn't find it a huge deal but for some reason a lot of books I've been getting have been coming in with less than stellar quality.
Maybe my expectations were a bit too high, but it was an enjoyable read and in my opinion, every Alien fan should own this book.

Spoiler Alert: if you ever wondered about the original Alien having a Human Skull behind the dome, well you'll be glad to know this is where we will hear one or if you've read the comics then where you'll see one.
I am glad that hicks and Bishop are reprieved by the original Aliens movie actors and it really felt nostalgic listening to them. They played a phenomenal role and really felt part of the movie. I will say even though I like this story better than Alien 3 movie, I still don't think it is the greatest although at this point this is better than even Alien Resurrection . But Audible Managed to make a bad story into a great Audio drama.
I would definitely recommend this to be listened. Its a great audio drama and if you have a chance then listen to the other Alien Audio Drama Out there.
First let me say, the hardback cover to this comic is beautiful and amazing. The artwork is good, but sometimes it can be confusing to understand what’s going on panel to panel (though maybe it’s just because I’m not an avid comic reader).
The comic follows along with the original script pretty closely at the start, but where it deviates is where you might lose some love for the comic.
The cast of characters is cut down from the script, but the characters in the comic are good and fairly fleshed out. And it’s always good to see Hicks and Newt back.
But if you were hoping for awesome scenes of Pulse Rifle destruction and slaughter, you’ll be left lacking. There are no guns, only some arm contraption that fires projectiles that Hicks uses.
Essentially all the action packed and tension filled bits from the script are missing here, which is understandable. The lack of these scenes doesn’t make the story suffer at all, in fact this comic offers a very good take on the Alien 3 story.
But if you were like me and were hoping for something a little closer to the original script, you may feel a little disappointed.

The coverart is beautiful and the artwork is astounding.
The story is entertaining and explores topics which eventually we moved into in the 90's (such as cloning, dolly the sheep), and the idea or space Marxists wanting to keep up with the weapons of capitalists draws parallels to the cold War.
Being a dark horse comic you can tell this script had to be stripped down to get into the comic books which sadly takes alot of potential dialog and character development. But was still a fun read nonetheless.
Happy and entertained with this and will no doubt come to read again and enjoy again.
Die Story hier ansich gut, bin aber nicht wirklich der Meinung es wäre der bessere dritte Teil geworden - schon wegen der begrenzten Möglichkeiten der neunziger.
Werd ihn noch einmal lesen und dann weiterreichen.
