“PRIVATE FIRST CLASS ZULA HENDRICKS IS NO STRANGER TO COMBAT, and war exacts its toll. Fortunately the Weyland–Yutani Corporation has great need for Colonial Marines with grit, be they of sound body or not. In the dark quiet recesses of derelict ships hide monsters humanity has never known … or so Weyland–Yutani might wish us to believe.”
“When Zula discovers why the corporation is searching for xenomorphs, she goes rogue and commandeers their ship, the Europa, with help of the synth unit Davis 01. She’s on a mission to destroy the Aliens before Weyland–Yutani can find them. “
“Warriors like Zula aren’t trained for terror like this. In her effort to save Earth, Zula’s grit will be tested.”
This 160–page color trade paperback represents the first 6–issues of the Dark Horse limited comic book series ALIENS: DEFIANCE published between April 2016–June 2017. It also contains the short story tie–in ALIENS: DEFIANCE–EXTRAVEHICULAR originally published in May 2016 as part of the release FREE COMIC BOOK DAY: SERENITY.
Taking place in the year 2138, this story chronologically falls between the films ALIEN and ALIENS. Also, it takes place one year after the events depicted in the Creative Assembly / Sega video game ALIEN: ISOLATION, and does reference the Seegson Corporation, Sevastopol Station & Amanda Ripley.
Written by Brian Wood (Briggs Land, The Massive, DMZ), the author weaves a solid _ if at times slightly disjointed _ tale of an unlikely trio of idiosyncratic spacefarers, attempting to thwart the always nefarious schemes of Weyland–Yutani. The darkly contrasting visuals are excellently suited to the subject matter, and extremely consistent considering 3 artists were involved. (Tristan Jones: Chapters 1–2 & 5–6, Riccardo Burchielli: Chapter 3, Toni Brescini: Chapter 4).
Why the mediocre 3–star rating? Beginning around the time of the original Amazing Spider–Man #50, I’ve been consuming comic books through 6 long decades. Every now & then, as the stories start to fall flat, I need to take a break. So, these days I’ve been satiating my Alien / Predator appetite more with recently released Omnibus MMPB collections, along with some other interesting new original one–shots & anthologies.
So, blame it more on me & not this worthy paperback.
