One of my all time favorite Aliens stories is Nightmare Asylum. The story continues Newt's and Hick's (or in other editions, Billie's and Wilk's) journey from Aliens: Book One. I'm not going to go into the stories here, but just know they are awesome "what if" stories, if Alien 3 wasn't part of the canon. This edition also collects Female War, which was not my favorite, but needed if you want to see how the story ends.
For the price and size of the book alone (Dark Horse's Library Editions are always well made), buying this story is worth it. However, my book was damaged upon arrival though sealed "new" in plastic. This is frustrating for collectors and really for people who pay money for a "new' product. Hence, the 3 start rating. I'd rate it lower, but that wouldn't be fair to the actual story.

In 1986, James Cameron's Aliens brought to theaters the horrors of a new kind of war against a terrifying enemy. Long before Alien3 was even a glint in director David Fincher's eye, Dark Horse Comics was already crafting a terrifying post-Aliens continuity for Ripley, Hicks, and Newt.
Earth is overrun by xenomorphs with no hope of saving it for humanity. But that doesn't mean just leaving it to the Aliens. Ripley has a plan to capture, from what they believe is the Alien homeworld, a "Queen Mother"--a super queen that rules multiple nests--and bring it back to Earth. There the Queen Mother will command the xenomorphs to gather where they can all be destroyed by nuclear bombs.
Collects Aliens: Nightmare Asylum #1-#4 and Aliens: Female War #1-#4. Includes cover art for all issues.

The first half of this book is awesome, beautifully and fully drawn, great story. The second half is drawn by a different artist who seemed to have spent most of his art time drawing for the geek males to drool over Ellen Ripley. There's a lot of inconsistency in the art, clothing changing colors and awkward, if not painful poses by the characters. Monica Livingston, the colorist on Earth Wars, needs to learn continuity badly. Most of it is drawn like a terrible attempt at drawing like Jack Kirby. The amazing picture of Ripley that finishes off Nightmare Asylum is destroyed by the second artist; whoever came up with the idea of changing artists midstream made a terrible decision. The story's okay, but the art kills it. The first half, 5 stars. The second, 2, and that's only because the writing is good.

I bought this mainly to get some additional background outside of the movie franchise on the Alien universe in preparation for an Alien RPG campaign some ways down the road.
I found the book very enjoyable to read and the quality seemed to be very good though it's size and shape is a bit odd but not enough to take a star off the review.

The book is a huge blue hardcover tome with blue metallic gilding on the edge of the pages. The art is printed with very high quality ink that makes the colors vivid and every page feel like looking into a painting. Also Nightmare Asylum is arguably one of the best Alien story line ever penned in the comic world, and this is arguable the best way to experience it.

It's great to finally have these comics in their original form. That they are presented in a deluxe format like this is a great bonus. The story is a fun alternative to Alien 3. Fans of the film "Aliens" should find a lot to like in this volume and the one that preceded it!

A bit pricey for a graphic novel anthology, but I am a sucker for all things "Alien"! I am the same age as Segorney Weaver after all!

I'm getting hooked on this comics. Though I'm backwards on the storyline, but it's a great read.

when comparing this alongside the "nightmare asylum" TPB I find a page of the story cut from this edition and a blank page inserted furthar along to compensate. it kind of interrupts the flow of the read, and why go to such lenghts to cut a page? also "nightmare asylum" has three more covers by dennis beavais not included here. perhaps all of these where not present in the original print run. whould be nice to add them at the end as extras? but it is a nice book that most will love, slightly lacking for me.

Quality is superb, blue metallic gilding on the edges and a throwback to the second cover in the series as the cover for this anthology. Beautiful.

Il étais une deuxième fois "Aliens"
Reviewed in France on June 26, 2017Verified Purchase

Even though it's a bit expensive, once it arrives, you'll see why. It's high quality hard cover, pages that are shinny blue from the outside and content itself is good 200 pages of Aliens greatness. Just get it, you won't regret it.
