I found myself wanting something more from my gaming experience. I converted to the PC platform for two specific reasons. Number 1: They're are way more games to choose from. Like I said earlier, I have always been a console guy. However with this past chooses of gaming rigs from the likes of Sony and Microsoft, I found myself bitterly disappointed. I feel like its the same old games done over and over again. You know what I'm talking about. Halo, Uncharted, the exact same stuff that was made years ago. I just felt like the selection is the exact same experience that I had 10 plus years ago. I'm sure many would agree with me that graphics, though important, aren't everything. At the end of the day, you got to ask yourself: "Is this game fun?" That's the most important thing.. I knew nothing at all about PC gaming and when I did research, I found that the Steam library is actually really sweet. In my opinion, it is a much more polished user interface than even my Xbox One experience. There are way more games to choose from. The games are like a buszillion times cheaper and you can play early access titles. I'm currently playing Ark Survival Evolved which is amazing! Steam had the game for sale the other day for 17 bucks. That's right, 17 dollars. This game is scheduled to come to the Xbox One and Playstation 4 in a few months. Now you know goodness well that it will cost at least 50 bucks, probably more like 60.
This leads to my second reason why I converted over to the PC gaming platform. The games are just simply cheaper and there is way more options to customize. Who says you can't use a keyboard and mouse in your living room? I'm doing just that very thing right now with a 55 in monitor, called my HD TV. Oh, and its sweet! The system ships with a Xbox 360 controller but you can buy a Xbox One PC adapter for like 25 bucks if you just have to use the Xbox One controller.
Why did I give it 4 stars and not 5? I loves this product but I recognize that its not for everyone. When you call it a console, in my opinion it should be super duper simple to use like a console. This is not the case. It's a PC and as such you have to go through all the headaches that you get from using one. However, I don't think this is a problem for most people, since most people generally know how to use a PC now a days. Also, to really get the performance that you want out of it for some of these graphically intense titles, I highly suggest that you buy the extra 4 gig ram card that you see is commonly purchased with this item! I can't over stress this very point. You need the extra RAM for it to run smoothly. I noticed a huge difference once I pot it in. It is really simple to do though. There are 4 screws on the bottom of the machine that you take off and then the thing opens up. You pop the two fans off and then pop in the memory. It is super easy to do. I was kinda worried because I'm not like I said a PC geek but it was really easy to do once I watched a YouTube video. Just search, upgrade ram alienware alpha and it should pop up. This being said, this is why I give it a 4 out of 5. There is a bit of work in the beginning but once you got it set up, you will be enjoying some really sweet games. If you haven't already, go get yourself a free Steam Account. Browse their library and you will see what I'm talking about. This machine is the magical Next Gen console gaming experience that I was looking for but didn't find with the Xbox One!
Listening to owners of Alienware devices always reminded me of listening to John Hammond in Jurassic Park reminding everyone that he "spared no expense". Owners of Alienware devices wanted you to know they were serious about gaming and serious about spending money on it.
Alienware became the Bose of the Gaming Computer industry. Sure, there were better and cheaper alternatives out there, but part of the whole deal with Alienware was the mystique of owning one.
So imagine how shocking it is to see Alienware release a console that not only performs well, but is most likely one of the most affordable "gaming PC's" on the market right now.
I purchased the i3 and paid the extra coin to upgrade the RAM and get the 1TB drive. My Gateway AIO just wasn't cutting it (it never really did with it's pathetic intel integrated graphics card), but it had a really nice 23" display and I didn't want to add another $250.00 repurchasing a monitor.
Since it had an HDMI input, and the Alpha, had HDMI out... I figured, what the heck.
I was not, however, prepared for just how awesome this box is. This thing runs every game I own unbelievably well at 1080P. Alien Isolation, Borderlands Pre-Sequel, Bioshock Infite. This little bitty box eats them all for lunch with graphics set to the maximum settings. Running Alien Isolation in 1080P did force the unit to turn up the speed on it's GPU fan, but that's the only thing I noticed.
The one title that really did seem to tax this little box is Metro 2033. Putting everything to maximum did result is some pretty significant stuttering, but this appears to be a result of texture loads from the HDD (5400RPM that it is). Setting the settings down one setting smooths things out quite a bit, as well as setting the resolution to 1280x720. I primarily run the box on the 23 inch monitor, and as such, set all my games to run 720P. I challenge anyone who can tell the difference between a 720P and 1080P running full tilt on a 23 inch screen. If you can, you are lying. Only through close examination of static screens can you really perceive a difference, and for me, it's not worth pushing nearly twice as many pixels through the GPU for an almost unnoticeable difference in quality.
All this from a $630.00 device shipped with tax.
Now most of the negative reviews out there are about how you can't use "standard drivers" to update the GPU or other "PC" related issues.
What they fail to realize is that the device was originally designed to run Steam OS. This was an initiative to run Steam's custom based OS on top of a stripped down Linux Kernel. The Alpha was designed to use this OS. Since the OS was open source either Steam would have been responsible for the drivers, or they would have been "open source" like a good many drivers are for Linux.
In 2014, Steam pushed back the release date for the Steam OS and Steam controller. This put Alienware in an uncomfortable position.
1. Sit on a bunch of hardware, lose the holiday shopping period, and hope that the Steam OS and controller release in 2015.
2. Take matters into your own hands and develop your own UI, bundle a microsoft wireless Xbox Controller and base it in Windows 8 so that the box can run existing Windows based Steam games using Steam's existing "Big Picture UI".
They performed the latter, which is why the box is a bit confusing and not quite as polished as one might expect. It was indeed a "rush job" to say the least. And as a result, it's not quite as "plug and play" as a console, and not quite as "upgradeable" as a PC. It lies somewhere in between.
But despite that, I'm glad they chose the path they did as I had no interest in a Linux based Steam box. Alienware appears to be fully supporting the box, and there have already been several updates, including a driver update to the GPU.
So far so good.
The point is, I have a pretty awesome little hybrid gaming console that due to a delay in the Steam OS becomes a PC that is just stupidly easy to move to my living room. I'd like to spend some more time gushing about the device, but I think I heard an Alien lurking in the other room and I have to find a locker to jump into and hide.
