From the Author of 'Simple Survival' & 'Adrift'
On a trip to the Lake Clark area of the Alaskan bush, a sudden arctic weather system forces down the small plane of Dr. Jim Wade, and his son David. Both have survived the crash, but not unscathed. Food, fire and shelter are all a priority. Following the death of his father, it is up to David to figure out what to do next, and how to survive, on a remote Alaskan mountain - in winter!
This is a story of survival, resilience and of the spirit to live. Although a fictional story, it is both authentic and accurate, having been written by a former Air Force life support survival instructor. For ages 13 and up.

First off, I'll say that I liked this book. It has a lot of potential and could be great if it had some attention of an editor and a little polishing by the author (which is something I heard he is in the process of.) It is a survival story about a young man named David who finds himself in a serious survival situation after enduring a plane crash with his father.
I really loved the descriptions of the rescue teams and loved all the useful information that gets slipped in by way of experiencing how David survives. I kind of feel like I'm a little better off in a survival situation if I should ever find myself in one.
The story not only follows David, but also one of his rescuers, Frank as well as David's family and I began to care even more about David as I learned how much his mother and sister cared for him as well as Frank and his family.
I also really liked all of David's hunting and snaring scenes and became nervous right along with him when he would encounter a bear. We even get a sneak peak at what a bear thinks, which I found very entertaining.
This is a story that has an underlying Christian theme and I already have a few readers in mind to recommend it to. I very much enjoyed that aspect of the book.
Finally, at the end there is a glossary that I loved. It explains terms like Bingo on fuel, which means running out of or low on aircraft fuel and bird, which is another name for helicopter or any other aircraft. This was a nice addition to the story and I will probably go back to it to learn more. Great information. Like many fiction readers, one of the reasons I like to read is to pick up more information without having to read nonfiction books. This area of the book was very well done.
Overall an enjoyable book that has a lot of potential once polished by an editor. And actually, the grammatical stuff did not really bother me. It is clear that there is a talent for writing here. I loved the family bonds, the Christian theme and all the useful survival tips.
Throughout the highly complex, well-elaborated, gripping plot, various key life issues are addressed, such as how to deal with the decease of a loved one who died by your side while you two were alone in the wild, how to mourn, how to get take care of yourself when you are alone in the Alaskan wilderness and have no means to contact anybody for help, or how to remain motivated and persevere in your quest for survival. I could go on, but I fear that I might reveal too much about the plot if I did.
W.R. Benton must have substantial experience in search and rescue operations, and it shows. He has managed to explain, in a manner which is simple to understand, accurate and entertaining, the implications of search&rescue operations, whilst needling them into the story line which makes the book so hard to put down.
I have learnt a lot from this book; things that you would not know if, like myself, you have never been camping, fishing or hunting.
I recommend this book to anybody aged 13 or over.
Alive and Alone tells the story of a young boy who survives a plane crash during an Alaska Winter and his father's death soon after the crash. He is then left, alone, to face the wilderness and survive.
Its a touching story, and I'm excited for my kids to read it, when they are old enough (junior high, maybe?). I took away a few key themes that I really enjoyed: having the will to survive, never give up and if you are determined enough, you can overcome most challenges in life. The main character (David) is a smart, family oriented, driven young man who is not above making mistakes. Again, good themes for my kids to read, learn and appreciate.
I would have given the book four stars, but there were some formatting/editorial issues on the Kindle version. A few examples: the use of ellipses at the start of the book seemed overused, paragraphs were all indented too far in and font sizes were inconsistent.
All in all, I liked the book and will have my kids read it when they are ready. It will teach and reinforce ideals that I value.
I was touched by the child’s determination and his wanting to stick the fight for the right reasons. I also liked the respectful references to the military as I respect that too, very much. For the younger reader things were explained in a way that was very comprehensible (as was confirmed in reading this with my eleven year old). The stories of survival in this world can be endless but to describe it in this way, from a child’s perspective, with a slight level of gentile along with the hard hits, one after the other, is hard to accomplish. Well done!
This book was heartfelt and real with regards to sticking to your guns and staying strong. A great read for me and to have shared with my daughter!
All in all, as I said, another good read from W.R. Benton and I look forward to reading more of his books.

W.R.Benton describes the young hero's feelings about the loss of his father and his desperate situation in Alaska very good, while his mother hopes that he has survived. It was just a thrill and great entertainment to read this book. Some books are called "page turners". Now I know why. And it would be a good idea to turn it into a movie. I am sure it would be a success.

Kept me reading until the end! Keep up the great reads Sir!
