I'm always excited for things that remind me of our trip to England, and I couldn't resist getting this board book about London for our 9mo daughter. The art has a retro feel--a little bit 1960's in both style and color palette. Each full page spread features a different London activity or landmark ("Checking the time at Big Ben") with labeled travel-related items ("Suitcases," "Taxi," "Passport."). The final spread is a collage/checklist of London icons and travel necessities. While I questioned some of the pages (the one dedicated to the Gherkin, for example), on the whole the book is really fun and tries to present a multi-dimensional snapshot of London. We've really enjoyed it.

I was not impressed with this book at all. Rather than show us the 'unique qualities' of the city of London, it merely perpetuated some tedious stereotypes of London as seen through the eyes of an American tourist.

Many of the illustrations such as an art gallery or museum, could have been anywhere in the world. The Queen of England was randomly hanging out at St Paul's Cathedral by herself, which seems odd. There was a steam train driving over Tower Bridge, which has never happened since it opened in 1894.

You know those movies where they play "London Calling" by The Clash, while showing us a montage of Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben etc? Well this was more silly than that.

And I get that it is a children's book, not a detailed historical tome. But I still think there were some crazy omissions, nonsensical illustrations, and the book failed to do anything other than throw a few stereotypes in our faces. If the goal of this book is to provide an interesting slice of other places and cultures, even on a very surface level for infants, this failed to do that. I think a less lazy revision would be in order.
