I thank Julia McDermott for sharing her experience with us. As I read her book (I am still reading it), I realize that I am not alone and that my feelings, fears and hope are not unique or strange. Only those who have walk this road can truly understand this cruel and brutal illness called cancer. Cancer, like a cruel master, forces you to stand up and keep walking when all you want to do is to stay down and hide.
I particularly appreciated Jack's perspective. Jack's reaction to his diagnosis was very similar to my son's and the book helped me to understand exactly how he felt and the extent of his struggles. Now that I am seeing things from the young adult cancer patient's perspective, I think I will be better equipped to improve my emotional support to my son.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is a caregiver to teenage or young adult cancer patients - the way they see things can be quite different from a child with cancer or an older adult with cancer. Notwithstanding my recommendation, the book is also good for anyone facing cancer whether as patient or caregiver.
So so glad Jack is doing well. I love the good outcome!
