The reader spent most of his life in communities of 50 to 70,000 with rarely more than 1 murder a year. Its very hard to imagine such tension in the policeman's daily work life. Using the "race" card and having the public officials settle claims without due trial just caused and unlimited acceleration in racial trouble. Having such a large element of unemployment along with uncontrollable drug traffic simply creates and unmanageable atmosphere for law enforcement on a daily basis. The author has done a terrific job of carrying the reader thru his life, from a teenager until he retired an regained his composure and values we all cherish. This book is a great read for all adults interested in our society as it is today.
My favorite quote from the book is a sad one, regarding the funerals of fellow officers: "When I say that this was a difficult process, it would be an understatement. Nearly every one of these funerals was basically the same sober process as the one prior. Sobbing wife, children, parents along with tears in the eyes of police officers who did not know the fallen officer but 'we all bleed blue'. We all cared, we all knew it could have been one of us. This imprint on my mind would have a profound effect on me for my entire life. You never forget."
Thank you Sgt. Smith for putting your life on the line every day, for the sake of people you never even met. A good read for anyone who knows someone in law enforcement, anyone from the Bay Area, or those who simply want a peek into a day in the life of a cop. I learned a lot about Michael Smith, and what made him tick.
