Gr 3 Up—Previous picture books about Juneteenth (the holiday celebrating the day slaves were freed in Texas—two years after the rest of the country) have focused on contemporary children discovering this quirk of history. Valerie Wesley's Freedom's Gifts (S. & S., 1997) and Carole Boston Weatherford's Juneteenth Jamboree (Lee & Low, 1995) fall into that category. Johnson imagines what it would be like to be a slave one minute and a free person the next. Spare text, structured as free verse, hones in on the smell of honeysuckle and breakfast routines as the day begins, like any other. The titular phrase appears three times: first to build suspense, then to indicate the earthshaking import of the message spreading from the port, and, finally, to reflect on the consequences. Lewis paints details not mentioned. The protagonist is a girl living in the slave quarters with her siblings and mother. They are working in the cotton fields when the news arrives. Skillful watercolor renderings depict nuanced changes in lighting and focus, thereby capturing individual responses to a community's new reality—from incredulity and quiet contemplation to rapture. Occasional panels indicate passing time; the brilliant clarity of the fields at noon fades to a green-blue gauze over the revelers heading home from a late-night celebration. Angela Johnson has won three Coretta Scott King Awards, one each for her novels The First Part Last, Heaven, and Toning the Sweep. The First Part Last was also the recipient of the Michael L. Printz Award. She is also the author of the novels Looking for Red and A Certain October. Her books for younger readers include the Coretta Scott King Honor Book When I Am Old with You, illustrated by David Soman; Wind Flyers and I Dream of Trains, both illustrated by Loren Long; and Lottie Paris Lives Here and its sequel Lottie Paris and the Best Place, both illustrated by Scott M. Now a federal holiday!

I bought this book for the children of a neighbor to give them as a memorial of experiencing the very first celebration of this important date as a federal holiday with the legislation signed only yesterday by President Biden.
I saw my first celebration in about 1950 on my birthday. My mother and I were watching on the town square of a tiny rural town in south Alabama as a large crowd of the descendants of former slaves sang, danced, ate and drank with joy and jubilation like I had never seen. I asked my mother why they were so happy.
"Darling, they are happy because they are free!" I can't still hear that answer which made a strong, lasting impression on me as a small child of the importance of being free as only people who had known a very different existence can feel it and express it. Juneteenth has always been about that expression and I am delighted that it is now being recognized so that everyone can appreciate its significance .
The illustrations bring out the mixture of emotions felt by the families as the reality of a new life as free people was now possible and not a dream or a yearning.

Now, the celebration can be even more jubilant with a wider recognition of what it means to be free and I hope it will inspire children to continue the work of making us all cognizant of the legacy that unjustly deprives people of their freedom in a less than perfect world and to make it more just. It is still our duty to make ours a more perfect union.

I am eager to see how my young friends react to the book and what kind of impression it makes on them.

A great book to start the conversation about Juneteenth with your children

I wasn’t sure where to start the conversation about Juneteenth with my almost-four-year-old daughter. This book certainly helped with that. I know the few minutes it takes to read this book out loud are only the first of many minutes and hours I will spend talking to my daughter and family about the importance of valuing Black lives and remembering the horrific tragedies suffered by African Americans in our country. I would highly recommend this book to all.

Historically incomplete storyline

This is a beautifully illustrated book that fails to directly mention within the story that it took 2.5 years from The Emancipation Proclamation until slaves in Galveston were notified of their freedom. There is a “timeline of events” in the back of the book on a page titled “Important Dates”. There is also a “Juneteenth, Then and Now” page at the very back of the book that briefly mentions it took 2.5 years for Texas slaves to learn of their freedom. This book is fine as a jumping off point into a conversation about actual history and could be included in a Juneteenth lesson, but falls short if you are looking for a stand alone historically accurate storyline.

This book is simple...perfect...important. I recommend it to anyone who would like to touch - even for a moment - what that day could have been like for so many people learning that they were now free to just be. Though there are just a few words on each page, which is truly enough, combined with the stunning artwork, you will get lost in time and know that there is so much more you can learn with research and curiosity about what Juneteenth really means.

The illustrator mentions in his notes a book by Ralph Ellison - "Juneteenth" that I sadly admit I never heard of. I say sadly because this should have been something we all were required to read, along with many other books growing up. I'll buy that book next of course and cannot wait to discover each page.

Many thanks to Angela Johnson and E.B. Lewis for thinking about writing this book, taking the time to write and illustrate this book and having the courage to do whatever work they did to make it come to life. Only these two know how many times they were turned down by publishers, or discouraged to bother writing about a topic that seems unpopular in today's world. The fact that they saw this project through is worth giving praise to.

As a 4-5th grade teacher, I was looking for a picture book that would help teach my students about the official holiday Juneteenth. This book is perfect! The story tells about the first day of freedom for slaves in Texas. The length and language are perfect for any age. As an adult I really enjoyed it! The illustrator E.B. Lewis did a beautiful job capturing the mood and setting of the story. I really like that the author included her personal background, the process used by the illustrator, the history of June 19th, and a glossary.
