On All Fall Down, Shawn Colvin's third Nonesuch disc, the singer-songwriter enlisted as producer her longtime friend and occasional band-mate, guitarist Buddy Miller. The sessions, at Miller's home studio in Nashville, Tennessee, were distinguished, as Colvin describes them, by a kind of back-porch bonhomie. An open-door policy encouraged drop-ins from a number of stellar musicians, including singers Emmylou Harris, Allison Krauss, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Jakob Dylan as well as fiddle-player extraordinaire Stuart Duncan. The easygoing atmosphere, however, did not prevent the incisive Colvin, on these 11 new tracks, from examining some hard cold truths. Artfully pared-down arrangements mirror the compelling emotional directness of Colvin's songs, in which she addresses the dissolution of a relationship with the sort of dry-eyed candor that has long been a hallmark of her work. The material often took shape with Colvin performing live in the studio, singing and playing acoustic guitar, and the tracks were then subtly embellished by an impressive ad hoc combo Miller had convened, featuring Bill Frisell on electric guitar, Viktor Krauss on bass, and Brian Blade on drums.

Don't try this at home

Shawn has never hidden the fact that she is most at home as a solo artist. She explains this quite eloquently in her new memoir. Here she shines as only she can, recording live takes and embellishing them with the help of good friends. Her writing with John is full of character and maturity with a little fragility thrown in for good measure. I remember all the bad press and horrible reviews of 'Whole new you' only to have it become a favorite in my collection of her music. It had depth and emotion that sustained rather than simple pop to tap my leg to. This album achieves the same feeling with less dense production and seems more befitting of who she is as an artist. I think at this point in Shawn's life she most likely cares less about what becomes of an album than where the journey takes her and who is along for the ride. She has nothing to prove here. This is Shawn perhaps at her personal best and that's just who she needs to please.

It took a while, but I have ended up enjoying this album after all. It's a thoughtful, at times provocative album, which revisits thematically -- but not musically -- the familiar themes of self sabotage, sacrifice, love lost (and occasionally won) that Colvin explored so well on previous albums. However, there are many times when I found myself wishing that Colvin would forget the words for a while, and just break into one of her signature brilliant melodies and chord changes, There's not enough here in the latter department to merit 5 stars IMO, but I do think this is an accomplished work, even by the high standards one expects from an artist of such high stature.

I love everything this woman has produced, since she gives it her heart and soul. I read the mixed reviews and was disappointed in the REVIEWERS - they were so quick to pan it. But one reviewer I agreed with. Listen to it. I have it playing in my car CD player, and the more I listened, the more I loved it. If all you want from her is Sonny Came Home, don't buy her new work. This CD has such a wonderful mixture of politically inspired messages, to her incredible bluesy/country style lyrics which I have grown to cherish from her. So if you are not a true fan, and don't get this woman, don't buy it. But for any true Shawn Colvin fan, she will not let you down. This one is right up there with her best.

Shawn Colvin's new CD opens with the delightful title track that pulses energetically with a great full-voice chorus as a counterpoint to Shawn's lovely vocals, "I don't understand why & I might never know, but I believe in love; I like to swallow it whole." Co-written with John Leventhal & Jakob Dylan, "Seven Times the Charm" is a melancholy tune about not feeling worthy of love. "Up On the Hill" is beautiful, albeit melancholy. As a set, the songs tend toward the soft & sad. For a blockbuster CD, I usually prefer about two-thirds uptempo tracks. This set reverses the proportion, which weighs it down accordingly. While I'm glad I bought the CD and love the opening track, a more casual fan might want to scan the tracks and download the title track and other gems like "American Jerusalem." Enjoy!

I agree with the writer of the review that said this was "mature work". I am not sure I understand the negative reviews, this is a great work from start to finish. There isn't one song that I think doesn't deserve praise. I can't ever remember saying that for Shawn. I have always enjoyed her work, but she always had one or two songs that I wouldn't be satisfied with. That isn't the case with "All Fall Down". If you are expecting to be cheered up with this compilation, go somewhere else. Shawn has never been cheery. If you are expecting something thoughtful, provocative, but still very much in good taste, this may be the music for you. This is Shawn Colvin at her best.

Been a Shawn Colvin fan for years and so appreciate her solo acoustic work, her full band pop/soft rock efforts, and now what I consider her most mature work to date. I love Buddy Miller's influence on the record and love that she is singing with her favorite (and very talented) pals in a back porch setting. I can feel her comfort and depth with the songs, if you are looking for a pop rock/sunny came home album this is not it, but she has already been there done that. Give the album a listen and see if you don't agree.

Been a SC fan for years. Some new catchy lyrics. I will say I wish there were a few songs with quicker tempos and more upbeat lyrics. Middle age doesn't have to slow us down and depress us, SC; it has its own rewards, so could we hear a bit more of that next time? When I get in my car after a long day at work, give me something a bit celebratory and joyous. I wish you'd do an album devoted to providing a road trip sound track! Overall, a sterling effort from an American Treasure.
