Editorial Reviews

Review

“Breathtaking prose, enthralling story-telling, a rare find. Painter is a major talent!”- NYT Bestselling Author Gena Showalter

“Highly entertaining, utterly charming and memorable. A fantastic story. Kristen Painter has a new fan.”
~ Long And Short Reviews

“I was completely entralled in this debut novel by Kristen Painter. Who doesn't want a sexy, uberhot Viking at their beck and call? This book made me pause and think about what I would want to change in my life and the consequences that it may cause. Captivating and charming.”
~ Publishers Weekly, Beyond Her Book blog

“Painter's tale is a great read with a strong, likable heroine and a hero to die for. The paranormal aspects are woven seamlessly into contemporary New York, and the author's fun writing style captures the mood perfectly.”
~ Romantic Times Book Club Magazine

I downloaded this book because it looked like a really unique take on paranormal romance with a fantasy Viking and a contemporary heroine. I had no idea I'd discover a new must-have author! From the first page, I was in love with Ms. Painter's sharp, witty, entertaining voice and fell hard for spunky and *real* heroine, Calleigh. The hero is as hot as promised on the cover, a sexy Viking with heart and soul, but it is the heroine who stole the story for me. The story moves at a great pace, with a perfect balance of witty banter, sexual tension, and action. I read it in two nights, laughed out loud, and got a little teary in the end. Wonderful new author and I can't wait to read more!

Just silly - a 5 year old's fantasy of a magical knight on a white horse funneled into an "adult" storyline, overplayed with a Just Say No approach to an adult sexual relationship - abstinence with reluctant surrender to kissing until marriage. Stupid characters and plot lines abound. Oh well, you get what you pay for.

The Phoenix was an interesting variation but this book did take a bit for me to get through. I am glad I read it as there is warmth, humor, and an interesting storyline but the heroine was not someone I could completely get behind and wanted to smack a few times and tell her to "man up"! I like strong, plucky heroines so this was not my cup of tea but if you like a good story with a good cast of characters, steamy scenes, and a heroine who grows from a mouse to a confident person from a man's love then go for it!

It's hard to believe this is Kristen Painter's first book--the writing is so assured and fast-paced, the characters are so well drawn, and the tension between the very sexy hero and the completely lovable heroine is hard to beat. I've never been that interested in Vikings, but this book totally changed my mind! A great, satisfying read.

Snappy witty dialogue that's laugh out loud funny will keep you reading until the cows come home. The characters are well fleshed out (pun intended) and quite charming in this paranormal frolic through a disillusioned lass's life.

Calleigh unintentionally has called upon a Phoenix named Alrik who will grant her three changes. Given she's just quit her job because her lech of a boss came on to her, she's dumped her fiance since he was caught sleeping with her cousin, and both her parents passed away recently her life is not exactly moonbeams and pennywhistles.

She has to be careful what she wishes for though as sometimes what we get is not what we really want. In the words of an old Norse saying "Bad is called good when worse happens". Alrik is a Viking who desires nothing more than revenge in the beginning - for his wife who murdered him and his family. He became a Phoenix for vengeance alone. After spending time in Calleigh's world though will he realize that he can love and trust again?

I laughed through this book because the interactions with the characters are really funny - sometimes poignant as well. Alrik is everything you'd think of when you hear the words "Viking Chieftan". I was surprised that this was a very PG novel given the cover. Well maybe not all PG but it's been a long time since I've read a romance that doesn't have at least one sex scene. I would describe the spicy parts of this as pretty tame and more like interludes - not the full enchilada. Since I like me some major spice you'll understand that my giving this 5 stars really reflects on just how fabulous the writing is. Easily amongst the best I've read in the romance genre. I've been reading romance for over 30 years and this one feels fresh although the concept is similar to other books I've loved.

Those who enjoy historical, contemporary, and paranormal romance will find much to love in this tale.

I dont have a lot to say about this, but I will say that I loved Alrik and Cal. Alrik was very sweet and demanding, Cal was very funny and candid. And the story was original and interesting. But dont judge this book by its cover. The hot torso may lead you to believe that it is a hot and sexy read when it fact it is not. There is zero sex in this book. There is a lot of angst and romance, but no sex. Although there is some sexual dialogue, so I would recommend this to all but the youngest and most sensitive readers.

Although the ending seemed to be setting up a sequel about Valentius, there is as of yet no sign of a sequel.

Spoilers****. I loved reading their love story but was really let down by the ending. I love a good romance and I hate when authors go crazy with too much sex but this book had none. There was so much sexual tension throughout the book and talk about the female lead being a virgin until marriage. However, the author never satisfied the reader by having the couple act in their desires. Such a disappointment.... for a minute I thought I picked up this one from the YA section.

I enjoyed this book, especially the hero, Alrik. He had been betrayed and yet he was open and honest and I found that I liked everything about him. Calleigh was funny and very considerate but in some parts of the book, she irritated by by the decision she made or how she treated Alrick. Overall, it was a very enjoyable book that I would recommend to any romance reader!
