I first featured All Hallows' Eve in my 2016 Random Paranormal Tales series but unfortunately time got away from me and I just now got to read it. This story has a little bit of everything: paranormal, magic, mystery, drama, romance, and probably more angst than drama but whatever you label it as it will spike your heart rate more than once. If you don't like anticipation, if you need to know what happens before it happens well than this might not be the story for you.
Caleb and Zach are planning a huge Halloween party in their new home and quite frankly every time they talk about it, I'm screaming "NO!" but when was the last time characters listened to the reader? I had an inkling behind the truth of the house and its history more than once but even guessing here the author was going never squelched the adrenaline high I found myself on while reading it. Even without the title, this is story ripe for Halloween but if you read it at Christmas, Easter or even just a warm summer afternoon you will be WOW-ed by the journey.
Dominic and his sister Alice had previously lived in Ashworth Farm, the site of Alexander's banishment. Their estranged father sold the property without their knowledge and the new owner, Zach Briceworth, is a distant relative, as stipulated in their deceased mother's will. Dominic decides to check out the new owner, to ensure he has a protective tattoo to prevent attack by Alexander's spirit. He meets Zach's attractive housemate, Caleb, and the interest is mutual. Dominic doesn't want to confess all his worst assets, at first--like how he's descended from witches and the house may carry a malevolent spirit. He knows this makes him sound crazypants, even if it's all true.
As odd instances begin to erupt around them, however, Dominic is forced to come clean to Caleb, and Zach. It's a problem in their developing relationship--as Caleb's sure Dominic was using him to get inside info on the ghost business. Just when they reconnect, however, Alexander begins his shenanigans again, and this time, it's a life-or-death scenario.
I really enjoyed this sweet contemporary paranormal romance. Dominic and Caleb are building a strong bond--one that's a little frightening in its intensity for both of them. Could it be Alexander pulling their strings? The question is valid, especially when Dominic discovers paintings and journals from the era of Issac, Alexander and Liam. We have a few historical moments, mostly flashbacks in time that Dominic experiences in dreams. Those are never positive, but the paranormal activity isn't all linked to Alexander--and that's pivotal in the conflict resolution. When we get to the climax it was resolved almost too quickly, but I really liked how it all settled, nonetheless.
Dominic and Caleb are a sweet couple that have an intense attraction and many a yummy sexytime. The secondary characters, notably Alice and Zach are all interesting and good confidants. I really liked how well Zach and his father embraced the paranormal in their lives--mostly because they had a supposedly dotty aunt who initiated them, unknowingly, into the idea of witches. Expect to cute times, some tough times, some sexytimes and some ghosty times. Perfect October read!
The prologue takes us two hundred years into the past. We are introduced to a family of power, magical power that is. Something horrific has happened and a man pays the ultimate price. He is cursed to a life of banishment and solitude. Fast forward to the present and we have another broken family. Dominic and Alice have lost their mother but vow to keep her memory alive and maintain her quaint bookstore. When they receive word that their father has sold their childhood home, they are crushed. Passed along through many generations, their precious farmhouse held countless memories. Unbeknownst to them, it may contain secrets that have been waiting for just the right person to discover them.
Dom volunteers to collect information on the new owners. It’s a beautiful day when he strolls past his old house, yet he is struck with something akin to heat lightning when he meets Caleb. Their connection is swift and strong. He is instantly smitten. Despite his sister’s warnings, he dives in head first. He doesn’t know how to explain his marking and why Caleb’s best friend and roommate bears the same ink. He should explain his history and how it involves Zach but he’s panicked it will be the end for them. He can’t risk his blossoming relationship just yet. He’ll come clean…soon. Good intentions are just that and this one may shatter his fresh love before he has a chance to strengthen it.
What's to like: The sense of foreboding is strong and paves the road for the impending events. It’s clear both Dom and Caleb are perfectly matched but is it just fate? Or could history have a hand in their union? I liked the magic and the wiccan elements and the mystery tied everything together. I wasn’t tricked but I very much liked the treats.
What's to love: I wasn’t expecting the full compass of emotional zings. Hence the timing of the story, I assumed creepy would be a factor. Pain and sorrow filled moments came as a surprise. However, we are given a beautiful love story amidst the backdrop of suspense and a dose of sexy sweetened the deal. Strong writing with lovely characters delivered an enjoyable read.
Beware of: The most successful ghosts are those stricken with grief and fueled with rage. Be prepared for a sneaky spirit on a warpath of revenge.
This book is for: If you’re a scaredy-cat like me but are seeking a supernatural romance without the terror or horror, this is sure to strike your fancy. And yes, a black cat will cross your path.
