Jef Neve is a fine young pianist I'd like to hear more of but Jose James is the star here (bold to do pure standards CD with just a panist a la Tony Bennet and Bill Evans).Jose James is called "The Hip Hop Generations Jazz Singer".Here are all standards (unlike the original material on earlier James CD's) and it really nice,He has a voice that to my ears is close to a mix between Lou Rawls and Bill Henderson just a bit lighter in tone than either. And now on his first standard CD's he does the standards standard cannon:
1. Autumn In New York 3:20
2. Embraceable You 6:15
3. Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You 5:19
4. Body And Soul 6:26
5. When I Fall In Love 5:14
6. Tenderly 7:26
7. Just Squeeze Me 4:15
8. Lush Life 7:28
9. For All We Know 5:13
Daring or predictable?I can't say.But if you "have it" why not choose the best especially when you only have the piano and voice.Excecution and not discovering second tier material that may be worthy is not the goal.Their is no attampt to prove taste in choosing lesser material. That would be a bit preachy or "teachy" and here it's just proving chops that is goal.
You like if you enjoy Johnny Hartman and Leon Thomas (this is less "70's Hip" than Thomas but in same vein more like where Andy Bey has ended up).I first heard James on and excellent Timo Lassy CD "Round Two" (I recommend both of Lassy's solo CD's and his work with U-Street All Stars and the "Five Corners Quintet" which features Mark Murphy). If you like this and especially the earlier James CD than you'd dig Dwight Tribble who has a sound VERY similar to his hero Leon Thomas but you will find tone/sound of both Dwight Tribble sensibility and sound to both be in the same great vein. But Lassy and Tribble harken to late 60's Blue Note or early 70's jazz/funk fusion whereas this excellent CD hearkens back to pure jazz singing of the 50's.Really nice if not a a perfect CD.
Cheers

Editorial Reviews
For All We Know the stunning collaboration between new signing Jose James (vocals) and pianist Jef Neve, will be the first new album in Impulse! records since Alice Coltrane's Translinear Light in 2004 when it is released this May. In the tradition of classic albums like Coltrane/Hartman, this amazing duet record features Jose's inimitable voice paired with Jef's tasteful, creative playing on standards like "Body and Soul" and "Lush Life".

I actually purchased Jose James' latest record first and was expecting this one to be similar in style. It isn't, but it is still a very enjoyable collection. This record is more nightclub style; something you would expect to hear in a dark and sylish New York lounge. Clearly, while Mr. James is flying under the radar in terms of recognition and radio-attractive music, he is a fantastic writer and performer. This is a great record to wind down to at the end of a long day.

Incredibly well recorded featuring Jose with piano accompaniment and that's it. Why just 4 stars? There are some songs where Jose seems to struggle to hit the notes but to be truthful, they are very difficult songs to sing in the first place. Totally different than his latest CD, "no beginning no end" where he has an excellent bunch of jazz musicians backing him up - this is pure Jose and it is good.

A great new Jazz artist with style and sensitity to the music he performs.
He is so different from the legions of geat jazz vocalists.

I am a long-time jazz lover who is always on the lookout for new talent because let's face it - all of the old players are dying off and if the music is to survive, new musicians have to come along to replace the old guys. Jose James is not one of them.
As in the case of many recent disappointing purchases, I read a review of this album in the jazz press praising Jose James, whom I had not previously heard of. This album has him singing in a very dispirited fashion - slow tempi (sometimes but not always appropriate), no changes in dynamics, no vocal richness, and nothing improvised. While not all "jazz singers" scat, they do take liberties with phrasing, play with the melody etc. so that the song isn't just straight singing.
There isn't a single track that stands out here. The pianist, Jef Neve makes a noble effort to try to bring some feeling into this boring records, but ultimately falls short. One reviewer tried to compare this album to the famous pairing between Bill Evans and Tony Bennett but this doesn't come close. James and Neve might listen to that album and then try again.

This was my first experience with these artists. Extraordinary! Jose James has such a wonderful vocal sensitivity and Jef Neve is a fascinating pianist. His interpretations are a perfect compliment to Jose James' wonderful phrasing.

Simple stripped back intimate performance

Voice and piano- that's it and wow it's effective! A stripped back down tempo intimate performance that's evocative of a small basement Jazz club. The arrangements are simple and effective. The vocals are sublime - a soft tender reading of each lyric often trailing to a whisper. Wonderful!

A pleasant collaboration
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 23, 2011Verified Purchase
I bought this album on the strength of Jose James' previous two releases: the jazz orientated "The Dreamer" and the more uptempo neo soul sounding "Blackmagic". This CD "For All We Know" is much more mellow, consisting solely of Jose's sensual baritone vocals and Jef Neve's jazz piano. It has a very smooth jazz feel to it, meaning that you can relax, kick back and enjoy the experience with maybe a glass of wine and some candles.
All of the songs flow well together, and have very simple yet effective arrangements. There are no original songs, just cover versions of classic jazz songs by the likes of George Gershwin ("Embraceable You") and Duke Ellington ("Just Squeeze Me"). I think the album should be listened to as a whole as there are no particular highlights and no dull moments. It is just a continuous flow of pleasant delicate music and singing for lovers of jazz and easy listening.

I bought this because I just love Jose James. But found I just loved his voice intertwined with Jeff neves wonderful lyrical piano plating - such a marvellous combination of talents and musicality. Thus is my very first review, that's how much I love it.
