I bought this book because I saw a woman of color on the cover. Sue me. This author is brand new and I didn't see a single review but boy am I happy I got it! I enjoyed this book and give it 5 stars for entertaining me straight through.

This is a bit of a feel good story in some ways but deals with death, which is a heavy topic. The author doesn't hide from it or make it a subplot. In many ways the romance is second to it. It's right in your face the entire way but somehow manages to not be depressing. Well done on that front alone.

I love our lead protagonists. Clearly written and imagined characters that were well developed. I love how feminine the author allowed them to be. No blatant stereotypes here thankfully as some authors make characters cartoonish when they go down that road. But not Ms. Benson. Anna is great. I got her character and her actions, reactions and thoughts all made sense to me. I love, love, LOVE Lane. Another woman of color in an intelligent romance novel. A+ for that and I'll continue to be a champion for WOC in these books as I can't be the only woman looking out for them like a dolphin sighting. (Hint to the publisher...and authors...) The supporting characters were great too.

I love how smart this read was and fun. Decent dialogue. Nice conflict, though it was a bit obvious and predictable I still wanted to see how it all unfolded. Super great chemistry between the leads. I also really appreciate that the chemistry was there from the beginning and there was a nice build up. Very nice indeed...incredibly sensual.

So overall, 5/5. I tend to grade books based on how I feel after I read it and I felt like I wanted to keep looking in on Lane and Anna's lives. No english professor ratings here folks.

I've never heard of this author but I was thrilled to see a woman of color on the front. The author did a wonderful job with the characters. Her race was never made into an issue and she was written just like any other character. I loved this book. Everyone needs a best friend like Kym. Anna's relationship with the kids was quite a journey and very believable. Anna's mom was great and I loved how she easily accepted Lane as part of the family. Parts of this book made me laugh, some parts made me cry.

I thought the synopsis sounded familiar and this was confirmed in the first few pages when I realised I had originally read this story online. I did have some quibbles, but overall I found this to be an poignant look at the complexities of life, love and grief.

The original story has been polished and changed (it was originally set in the US and now takes place in Australia). As an Aussie I picked up a few places where the Americanisms hadn't been changed. Also giving the main family a different last name would have been a better choice, for reasons that become obvious later. Even in the original incarnation I found the situation that crops up towards 2/3 mark a bit overwrought (and somewhat unlikely) and the changes made to the situation here actually made that part of the story worse, and more unbelievable in my opinion. There are also a few punctuation and formatting errors.

That aside, the characterisations are fully fleshed, both major and minor. The relationship Anna builds with the children (Toby and Ella, who are absolutely delightful, even given the sad circumstances) is beautiful. Anna's relationships with her mother, Lane and Kym are all also wonderfully nuanced (I loved watching them all become a family). It's not an easy topic, but the balance between the sadness of the grieving process and the joy of creating a new family, relationship and friendship is managed beautifully.

This is a lovely debut story and I look forward to more from this author.

F/F romance

Family-centered lesfic with children characters is not my typical preference in this genre. In fact, I steer clear of it, lol. Kids (and dogs) in lesfic are too often a parade of cuteness I can't stomach... not to mention they have a tendency to de-sexualize the romance just as the comedies do. But when genuinely good writing is involved, I make exceptions. This is one of those times. :)

This author has a real talent for characterization. I cared about everyone here. The entire cast was well-defined and the writing was nicely descriptive so I could totally imagine them in every scene. The dialogue was well-done and I believed everything about the setting and jobs here. One of the leads is a woman of color... the author didn't shy away from this either as is usually the case. She even made the cover- love it!!! (take that!! BSB, lol) Lane is a beautiful and intelligent black woman and I loved how charming she was!!

What basically happens here is a 32 yr old anaesthetist in Brisbane, Australia has her life ripped apart when her brother and wife are unexpectedly killed and his two young children are left in her care. Anna and her girlfriend Haley are very independent career women and children were never in their plans. Torn and with everything to lose, Anna steps up to the responsibility and makes a new home in Melbourne with her niece and nephew. And the bulk of the story is readjusting to a new life with kids. New job. New friends. New love on the horizon.

I really enjoyed this idea that when your world is ripped apart and looking scary and hopeless, life draws in everything you need to reflect and support that new you.

This is a very character-driven story. Emotional and honest and very real.
