In this age of climate change, killer germs, and obesity, it's easy to feel as if we've fallen out of synch with the global ecosystem. This ecological anxiety has polarized a new generation of Americans: many are drawn to natural solutions and organic lifestyles, while others rally around high-tech development and industrial efficiencies. Johnson argues that both views, when taken to extremes, can be harmful, even deadly.

Johnson, raised in the crunchy-granola epicenter of Nevada City, California, lovingly and rigorously scrutinizes his family's all-natural mindset, a quest that brings him into the worlds of an outlaw midwife, radical doctors, renegade farmers and one hermit forester. Along the way, he uncovers paradoxes at the heart of our ecological condition: Why, even as medicine improves, are we becoming less healthy? Why are more American women dying in childbirth? Why do we grow fatter the more we diet? Why have so many attempts to save the environment backfired?

In All Natural* - a sparklingly intelligent, wry, and scrupulously reported narrative - Johnson teases fact from faith and offers a rousing and original vision for a middle ground between natural and technological solutions that will assuage frustrated environmentalists, perplexed parents, and confused consumers alike.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In this engaging look at the merits of nature versus technology, journalist Johnson ultimately comes down on the side of “reunification” of the two. Raised by granola parents, Johnson freely admits that he believes in antibiotics, vaccines, movies, space exploration, and cribs for babies. But he also cites examples of when technology may go too far. In his liveliest chapter, called “Masturbacon” (with subtitles such as “The Chickenification of the American Pig” and “A Date with the Inseminator”), he watches the stimulation and artificial insemination of hogs. Forget the old-fashioned family farmer. As Johnson notes, “The motto of the more efficient, inseminating, vertically integrated megafarmer could be: More handjobs on the farm, fewer farmhands on the job.” Johnson also discusses the stress of confinement for pigs. Some suggest breeding pigs that can happily stand on a small slab of concrete for their entire lives, or, as on a more natural farm, hogs can frolic in a “porktopia.” Johnson’s investigation is both horrifying and amusing, and readers will relish the colorful, witty writing and find much food for thought. --Karen Springen

Review

"Engaging, informative and heartfelt, "All Natural" gives voice and reason to the ecological anxiety and data ubiquity that permeate our culture." (The Oregonian J. David Santen Jr. )

"It's hard not to smile when [Johnson] writes tenderly about growing up as a naked back-to-nature kid raised on zucchini in a world of space-pod juice packets like Capri Sun and spreadable cheese food." (
Spirituality & Health Joshunda Sanders)

"Like every parent, Nathanael Johnson worried about the right way to raise his child. He had been raised by parents dedicated to a "natural" lifestyle -- should he do the same? But what is "natural"? Every time Johnson sought an answer, it squirted between his fingers. Luckily for readers, he wrote everything down. All Natural is the record of a sensible person trying to eff the ineffable, a guide to our increasingly irrational and artificial pursuit of the seemingly reasonable goal of a natural life." (
Charles C. Mann, author of 1491 and 1493)

"This guy can really write, and he can really report, and he can also really help you understand why some of the things you believe don't make as much sense as you might imagine. It's a book both gentle and wry." (
Bill McKibben author Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet)

"There is a third way between knee-jerk technophilia and an uncritical embrace of all things labeled natural, and Johnson shows us how to find it: follow the research. The fascinating science he chronicles with clarity and grace shows that sometimes higher tech means higher risk and sometimes 'all natural' is neither good for us nor particularly natural." (
Emma Marris author of Rambunctious Garden and staff writer for Nature)

Absolutely loved this book! Although my upbringing is a bit different (Catholic school kid turned West Coast liberal), I can relate to many of the clashes of values he describes. I've had similar encounters with irrationality on the subjects of yoga and GMOs.

It's refreshing to see an even-handed take on childbirth, nutrition, vaccines, and the environment that doesn't discount our deeply-rooted, emotional ties to nature. My sympathies lean toward the natural side, but I don't think that means putting aside technology or aiming for some long-lost utopia.

The author's approach of finding a middle ground is something we could all learn a lot from.

I read a lot of books that are essentially "preaching to the choir" for me and my philosophy of life. Reading about natural life styles, food, the environment, and of course natural birth I was immediately drawn to this book.

What is unique is Nate's balanced approach. Although I am a big believer in out of hospital birth, and feel our healthcare system is in great need for a complete overhaul, I am grateful for a hospital and its emergency care when my daughter had appendicitis. This "skeptics" report on liberal life (hippies, environmentalist, home birth, food and health care) is well balanced- talking about the benefits and risks of living in the haze of mainstream culture and the dream world of idealist- focusing on the issues and less on the rhetoric. A breath of fresh air that both sides need to hear.

I loved this book, as it appealed to my ongoing search for better health and wellness. The only reason I gave it a 4 star instead of 5, was because I don't think the author answered one of his own questions adequately, which was whether or not the natural approach really keeps us *happier*. Otherwise, a MUST read for anyone in search of "alternative" approaches to our current human condition.

He writes very well. Unfortunately, he suffers from the outside researcher. He know what he came across, and what he found interesting, but knowing a subject requires also learning the tedious, the superficially irrelevant, as well as time in the field. He raises good points, but spends far too long on baloney and in the end left me feeling he had missed the reasoning. I can not comment on the last third of the book, maybe it got better.

I ordered this book when I saw it advertised in Runner's World. It was a good read, but I admit to skimming over a couple of the chapters due to lack of interest or because I have already read too many books on that particular subject. I enjoyed his chapter on natural eating to improve his running. I think that it was clear he was just lacking in calories. Durianrider and the Fruitarian run amazingly long distances on 5000 calories a day with nothing but fruits and vegetables, so it is possible. One thing that impressed me about this book was the level of work that the author put into his research. He did a lot of traveling and spent a tremedous amount of time with people who could enlighten him on certain subjects. If you are into being more green or just more natural with regards to your life, then this book might be right up your alley. For me, many of the sujects in this book have already been beat to death by other authors, and subsuquently, many people already feel educated on these topics.

Loved this book! Funny, interesting, informative, and well-researched. I recommend it to anyone with a similar skepticism regarding what really is "natural" and whether that even matters.

I need to be up front and tell the readers that the author went to school with my youngest daughter and my wife knew both is mother and father when she was working on the school site council. That said, we enjoyed the local references in the book was was recommended by my daughter, who thought it was an important book for us to read. Ellen and I agree, it was well written and raised some interesting issues. Recommended.

Too many details, too much "I, me and myself"- facts and fable mixed in an uneasy muddle.
Not convincing. After jumping from one chapter to the next, I am afraid I left much of the book unread.
