Top customer reviews
We bought this tablet for her more with an educational purpose, than to watch cartoons. My husband is a software engineer and he really wants our daughter to learn how to code. There are so many different apps for that.
We have already tested it today, when the tablet arrived, but haven't shown it to our daughter yet.
There are three different colors and we chose the blue one, as it's her favorite color. It's very bright, the case looks like removable foam shell, very sturdy and easy to grab. It's actually a very nice decision of adding yellow color because when brother and sister share one device, it's better to go neutral.
There is a possibility to expand storage up to 256 Gb, but I think 32 Gb on board will be more than enough for my daughter.
Big cutouts make it easier to access to the volume and power buttons, as well as the charging port and headphone jack.
The display is ok for the price. When I watched Peppa Pig, images looked sharp and colors were vibrant, even at extreme angles. The sound is much better here than in Fire 7" Kids Edition, and that's due to dual stereo speakers.
I don't know how easy and intuitive the interface will be for our daughter, but for us it was great, nothing odd or unnecessary. My favorite option is Parent Control. I can password-protect purchases (including in-app purchases), Wi-Fi access and more. I can also set educational goals, for example, my daughter will be able to watch cartoons only after she does some coding with her dad for 20 minutes.
Cameras really bad, which is a bit sad, as my daughter love to take pictures. All of the shots I've taken were done outside, in our backyard. Even with a perfect lighting, they had a purplish hue and fuzzy edges. The selfie camera on the front gone further and made me look like an elf.
Battery life is probably the strongest side f this tablet. I used it hard today and still had 30% left. Very impressed!
Is it worth the massive price premium over the standard HD 8, though? Not quite. It's nice to have a two-year warranty, and the case is nice, but for what you're really paying is a parental control. We all want to protect our children from the dark sides of the internet and Amazon Fire 8" can help a lot with it, just be ready to pay for that.
FreeTime has a wealth of content, and it includes a kid-safe web browser that will only load sites that are whitelisted by you or Amazon. If you don't want your child using the browser then it can be turned off. You can also restrict access to certain categories, set time limits, and view what your children are watching and reading with the Parent Dashboard. After the first year there is a nominal fee to continue using the service.
As far as cons I would like to see Prime videos be available for download and viewed offline. Content is limited if you do not have wifi. I also think the interface could use a little polishing as the navigation can be clunky at time. Finally, once you move outdoors the screen could wash out in the sun. With all of that in mind I'm knocking off a star.
- You can view purchased Amazon videos offline when not connected to wifi. Switch to your adult profile and download the video(s). Now go into settings, profiles and family library, select your child profile, add content, videos, and select your videos.
- You can sideload Google Play and gain access to even more apps such as YouTube Kids.
- You can set FreeTime to only allow entertainment content after daily educational goals have been met.
