Basically a 4K 55inch flat screen TV -- what's not to like? But how much of a tradeoff in picture quality should I expect considering its amazingly low price? The answer found in the comments here suggested such a tradeoff would be real. Some, for instance, wrote of seeable shadows in the corners during low light scenes. Others of good, but less than stunningly good, color and some details lost in contrasty scenes. And out of the box all of that was so.
I'll add here that I am a retired imager and that I have years of daily experience seeing and understanding what is missing in images -- why some are less than ideal -- and the making corrections to that end. And to my joy this unit has all the built in tools needed to do just that. -That the corner shadows could be removed by adjusting the back light output, that over-rich, 'old-TV 'type colors could be made film-like by adjusting other parameters, including gamma.
With just a bit of tweaking the images on this set are nothing short of superb.
Being an Amazon "Fire" centered Smart TV (and not, for instance, a ROKU centered one) was to me a mixed bag. The Alexa control is a plus while the limitations of available services was a negative. Most of the many services that are available are not desirable to me, and others that are desirable are not available. Obviously personal preference is a major factor here. But in any case a ROKU or, say, and Apple TV unit can be plugged right in and that done, although some of the Alexa voice command power is lost (everything in life is a tradeoff!), the services are then available and Alexa assist aside work just as one would wish.
The units stand is reasonably stable -- at least in an adult-only situation. With children I'd liit it to wall mounting. (I think this is so with pretty much every large flatscreen, but it is worth mentioning.
The remote works well and being bluetooth driven, not depending on line-of-sight to a sensor, is a plus. (Too bad that bluetooth feature doesn't extend to speaker connection.)
The inputs and outputs are fine. And while th internal speakers cannot be mixed with external add-ons, the earphone jack stay live and usable at the same time as the digital Toslink jack. Thus enabling a reasonably versatile eternal speaker setup. Oh, and the built in speakers are remarkably good. =Better than those typically found on a flats screen TV.
Overall, with just a bit of picture tweaking, this is a truly fine performing "TV" -- one worthy of even serious film viewing. That such can be found on a unit selling anywhere near this one's price (even when not on a special sale) is to be dumbfounding.
Very highly recommended!
Amazon and Best Buy are keeping $200 of our money as a way to screw customers for ordering defective products.
Update: after contacting consumer affairs, they advised me to contact the FTC and the FBI. I also contacted the BBB. Disputed the transaction with the bank and escalated the issue with amazon.
I recieved a partial refund. Then finally today the rest of the refund. 10-30-20.
You can do NOTHING but watch OTA programming with this TV, unless you have an amazon account linked to it. And you can't download, even FREE apps, without the account, AND with a linked and valid credit card. I spend quite some time talking to Amazon about it. There is just no way to do it.
Also, if you want to use a sound bar with it, be aware that the remote control is not IR based so it is not possible to control most sound bars with the TV remote.
