Thin and light for one-handed reading

New—The all-new Kindle is 11% thinner and 16% lighter than the previous generation Kindle, making it easy and comfortable to hold in one hand.

No glare in bright sunlight

Unlike reflective tablet and smartphone screens, the high contrast touchscreen display eliminates glare in any setting—even direct sunlight.

No eye strain, reads like real paper

Kindle uses actual ink particles and proprietary, hand-built fonts to create crisp text similar to what you see in a physical book. The blacks and whites on the screen are uniform, improving text and image quality.

Battery lasts weeks, not hours

Kindle doesn’t need power to maintain a page of text, allowing you to read for weeks on a single charge.

Unlike tablets, no blue light to disturb your sleep

Recent studies have shown that evening exposure to blue light from backlit screens like tablets and smartphones can suppress the body’s production of melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone that helps the body fall asleep. Because the Kindle display emits no light, you can read anytime without losing sleep.

Thousands of books, no distractions

Kindle is designed as a dedicated e-reader. Indulge your love of reading without interruptions like email alerts and push notifications.

If you read the "KNOW WHAT YOU ARE BUYING" review for the Kindle prior to this one then you know where I am going. Already this new Kindle is riddled with one star reviews from people that seem to not have read the product description. Here goes:

What you will get though is an awesome entry level Kindle with software almost identical to the higher end models. The print looks flawless outside, by a window, or under a lamp, in other words, just like a real book.

Just two months following Amazon's introduction of their premium-priced (and somewhat controversial) Kindle Oasis E-reader with Leather Charging Cover, Amazon has brought out their 8th-Generation Kindle. Imagine, the Kindle was first released on November 19, 2007, for $399!

This is the least expensive model in the current Kindle lineup and bookends the Oasis at about a third of the price, with the Paperwhite and Voyage in between. In the eight and a half years that have now gone by since the first Kindle, Amazon continues to make incremental improvements, and this new refinement of the Kindle has a couple of significant differences that make the product and experience better, for some users at least.

I ordered this model because I wanted to see how much different this Kindle is from my other models (I have one each of the others mentioned above). Does it really make that much difference to have a Kindle without the built-in lighting?

-- It's the least expensive Kindle (and the price is unchanged from the 7th generation version).
-- As an e-reader it does everything that the more expensive Kindle models do - it runs the same e-reader software, it has the same processor as the more expensive Paperwhite and Voyage models, and it synchronizes with your Kindle book library and downloads books via wi-fi.
-- It has exactly as much storage for books as any other current Kindle model, 4 GB, enough for 'thousands' of books.

I don't know why there are so many bad reviews. First of, let's start off by pointing out the obvious, it's under $100. You're not going to receive a Kindle Paperwhite. Before you order, read the specs and compare it to the other Kindles. Yes, the specs say it doesn't have backlighting so honestly, there shouldn't be one ounce of surprise when you receive this. I on the other hand, love this little Kindle. I have had the new Kindle Paperwhite and I really didn't like how big it was to hold in my small hands. I don't have children hands, but I'm a female and my hands are on the small side. Maybe for a male this would be kind of small, Idk. Anyway, it is smaller than the Paperwhite, but I love that. I also love the fact that it doesn't come with a light. I used to read at night with the Paperwhite, but that light gave me a headache so I stopped. It is NOT as dark as these bad reviews make it seem. You can read perfectly fine being indoors. They're exaggerating. This feels more like a book to me than the Kindle Paperwhite ever did. The letters on this Kindle are amazing.

I don't even notice the difference between ppi and I love that the letters are way darker than the Paperwhite. The paperwhite had a grey hue to them and I didn't feel like I was reading a book. I felt like I actually holding a technical device to read a book. Of course since this doesn't have a backlight, you cannot read in the dark. It's common sense. If you want to read at night, purchase a little book light that are super inexpensive and attach it to your kindle. It's not a big deal and you're not going to break the bank buying a $119.99 item when you can buy this little awesome e-book reader for $79.99. Think about when the light runs out of your expensive other e-books...

I was really excited to see the new kindle announced and at such a great price point. I pre-ordered the kindle and received it right away the day it came out. I've been using it every since and have a couple other kindles I compared it to. I'll put this up here. After spending money on an official amazon kindle case for this(and waiting 5 weeks for it to arrive), it costs as much as one of the more expensive, but ultimately more useful Paperwhites - [[ASIN:B00OQVZDJM Kindle Paperwhite E-reader - Black]

The battery life, and that sweet sweet backlight is absolutely a necessity for me. I read my kindle roughly 5-6 days on the train, plus when I'm at home usually unwinding getting ready for bed. Even on the train when I didn't absolutely need a backlight I found myself using it at a very low setting on the kindle to just boost the screen a bit. At home I needed the backlight so I could read because I dimmed my lights to a low setting in the room. This alone makes the extra money on a paper white is absolutely. I really do appreciate Amazon slashing the entry level price, and I think the target here is for parents who want to get something very cheap for their kids, or students. Its genius for that market, so if you are a parent who has a few kids, and want to get them something that won't break the bank, but won't let them sit online and play games on their smart tablet, or fire device.

Charges quickly via micro USB port
Price point to get a kindle is incredible
Same book storage size as the much more expensive kindles on the market(4 Gigabytes)

No built in light
Battery life is a little less than I'd like, sometimes making it only 2 weeks before dying
Case feels cheap, not soft touch like the older kindles
