I originally read a decent chunk of these years ago when they were new. At that time the next set of the original ova wasn't out yet and it was unknown if they would ever get created at all. With that said The All-New Tenchi Muyo was a great way to fill a need that was created after the abrupt end of the first OVA.
Now this series stands as a bridge between the first two seasons episodes 1 - 13.5 and seasons 3 and 4.
The main thing to note here is that the third and fourth seasons at the time of the publication of these mangas was an unknown and it shows. Instead, these books were meant to be a direct launch from the first and second seasons. In many ways, this is a good thing because a lot of effort was put into them by the creator Hitoshi Okuda. The art although a bit different from the anime is smooth, fluid and shows a lot of character. A great read for any Tenchi fan.
The only quirk for these has to do with the method of printing. Most traditional manga's read right to left and from what in the west would consider back to front. However, because mangas weren't fully mainstream during these books initial publication everything is flipped to the western standard. Not a big deal but I know some purists out there who would scoff.

My first introduction to the Tenchi universe were the several TV series. I decided to order some of the manga series to see if it was as enjoyable. I ordered the first two books of both the "The All-New Tenchi Moyo" series and the "No Need For Tenchi" series. I recommend this series over the other series; this series feels more like the TV series with the same quirky characterization and fun stories. The "No Need For Tenchi" series relies on lots of fighting action and is weak on plot and characterization.

The All-New Tenchi Muyo is a great way to introduce the characters! First, there's Tenchi Masaki, the earth-boy that's half-alien. Ryoko, former pirate. Ayeka, the prim princess of Jurai and her little sister, Sasami. Washu, the 20,000-year-old genius. Ryo-oh-ki, the 'cabbit' which has a love for carrots. The fun never ends when all these women vie for Tenchi's love. The high point of Alien Nation is when Ryoko goes to work at a fast-food place and blows it up.

I use to watch the show when i was a kid on Cartoon Network back in 2000. I recently went looking for the show and i watched threw all of the episodes begining to end and loved every bit of it. I came to amazon to see what they had for Tenchi Muyo and i found the books i started buying them and i don't regret it! This book was the first one i started reading and i just finished it and it was Hilarious! Espically Ryokos chapter! AMAZING! The books are just like the show and the characters dialoge is just like the characters voice actors in the show! If you want to try some of the Tenchi Muyo books start here! You wont regret it! :)

Book 1 of the All-new Tenchi Muyo series delivers all the humor and fun you would expect from the previous No Need for Tenchi manga series. Hitoshi Okuda even offers a quick review of the main characters for any new readers. Much like the former No Need for Tenchi series, Book 1 is set up in seven short stories that display the wackiness of the characters as they attempt to tolerate each other (and set up a date with Tenchi.) The only complaint I have with this book ("Alien Nation") is that no major story arc is set up. While this is not always a negative thing, I did expect to see the development of a multi-chaptered storyline that would lead into the next book. Overall, however, I suggest to any Tenchi (or comedic manga) fan to check out Okuda's All New Tenchi Muyo series because both the animes and the former manga series all delivered.

Want more Tenchi Muyo? This is the book for you!
This has a pretty standard format to it. All the main characters from the OVA are here, and they all have their own chapter. The most romantic is Ayeka's chapter, the funniest is Mihoshi's, the sweetest is Sasami's. Ryoko is her brilliant self and Washu even gets some glory in chasing off petty thieves.
For me the original OVA was perfect. Only one thing let it down - I wanted more! The recent(ish) release which was supposed to carry on the story did little to quench my thirst, so I decided to go back and find some of the old Tenchi Muyo manga.
The art style in this book is perfection. Sexy, romantic, cute, all in one. Every Tenchi situation is catered for, and as a fan of Tenchi from a very young age, I know other Tenchi veterans will love it. However, it isn't confusing at all, meaning new fans could technically jump in. I would recommend seeing either the OVA or TV series first, just to become acquainted with the characters. These are like side stories, perhaps even very enjoyable filler.
I will definitely be carrying on with this collection of manga, though I won't be ring-roped into buying them for ridiculous prices just because they aren't common. You can always find one or two of these volumes for a good price, and as far as I can tell from this volume each chapter has an individual story, so it's not necessary to buy them all or even buy them in the correct order.

TENCHI'S BACK!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 9, 2003Verified Purchase
Tenchi returns and we hope is here to stay! The first book introduces all the main characters for first time fans...and has a story dedicated to each character...excepct tenchi! However, anyone looking for a big storyline won't probably find it until book two...as this book is mainly for humour...each story though is charming and well-written! and thankfully, no radical changes to the art like the 'tenchi in tokoyo' series! same artist, same great stuff! buy it!
