The quality of the stories here are fine, but issues 38 and 39 are part of the "Black Vortex" storyline that spans 5 or 6 different titles (which is available in another, complete trade). Readers are faced with either (a) only understanding 3 of the 5 issues in this story or (b) redundantly purchasing these issues 2x when buying the Black Vortex trade, which is a win for Marvel but a loss for the consumer.
The gem of this trade is the Jean Grey-Emma Frost training session in Madripoor. It is drawn and colored well too. The last two issues deal with the Utopians, and it's a pretty weak storyline that is really just filler. Nothing new, unique or particularly interesting happens in that mini-arc.
Bendis is bored with the X-Men here, and it comes across. It's time to move on to the Fantastic Four or Alpha Flight (that would be a trip).
Speaking off, this trade collects the issues of the series dealing with that crossover. The Black Vortex was an interesting story, and had some really great moments, but you'll never get that from this trade, considering that you only get part of the story here. Overall, worth a read.
And yes, it can get worse than it was.
I'm curious as to how things progressed after Secret Wars.

The book is a mixed bag of artwork and the story does jump around a bit. You do need to read other books to get all the story.
Also Boby Drake getting outed as gay by his physic friend was crappy writing at its worse (dont have an issue with him being gay think thats a good way to go but a bad way to do it)
