Editorial Reviews

For her hotly anticipated sophomore album Nashville songstress Nikki Lane teamed up with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys for a record that turns the vulnerable singer-songwriter stereotype on its ears. With songs that crucify ex-boyfriends, celebrate one-night stands (as long as she can bolt town right after) and proclaim it s always the right time to do the wrong thing, Lane comes across like a modern-era Wanda Jackson, albeit with more oats to sow. My songs always paint a pretty clear picture of what s been going on in my life, so this is one moody record, she says. There s lots of talk of misbehaving and moving on.

This Dan Auerbach-produced (Black Keys) album has bold lyrics with an amazing country rock feel. Nikki Lane seems to be singing about what she knows and not just filling in a Mad Libs and putting it to music like so much of the country music currently being offered up by artists. I honestly don't think if your a music fan, of either country or rock, that you can go wrong purchasing All Or Nothin'

Great Album, Love it! Great voice, and she can sing aand Write. Not country , Not sixties , not punk rock ( like some say) just influenced by all and original!

Someday, Bear Family Records is going to do one of their big, pricey box sets on this lady. While all the hollywood-buffed “bra country” singers whine and pine, Nikki Lane strolls through All Or Nothin’ with a grin and an attitude. She manages to wring the whiskey out of her voice long enough to coo her way through “I don’t Care” like an anti-matter clone of Skeeter Davis, then turn up the gas for the Loretta Lynn-gone dark shuffle of “Man Up” and then set the whole thing on fire with the white-trash funky-abandon of “Sleep With a Stranger” [“you can call me anything you want to/just don’t call me after tonight” may be the lyric of the year]. Nikki Lane hasn’t hit the mainstream yet, but when she does, you’ll be able to hear the crash.

This is a great album in many ways, but for some reason can also annoy the heck out of me sometimes. It is not the musicianship or arrangements, which are beyond superb, but Lane's voice and lyrics are something you have to be in the right mood for. When you are, it's perfect, but other times it can be shrill and whiny. On the mellow "All or Nothing", she sounds spot on and slightly reminiscent of Sheryl Crow when she was at her zenith. Her duet with the guitarist from the Black Keys ("Love's on Fire") is also very good.

The vocals are more uneven on the rocking numbers, where the lyrics don't always help either, with an abundance of aggressive promiscuousness on many songs followed closely by songs where the woman sounds oddly whiny and weak. The two don't always sit well next to each other track wise, and you get the sense that some are overdone in an attempt to try to cultivate that one "bar anthem" hit ("It's always the right time to do the wrong thing", "Tonight's a good night to sleep with a stranger", etc). Then in the next song she is singing about how she doesn't care about doing a guy's laundry who sounds like he's gone all the time and doesn't care about her all that much. Very disjointed.

Those are in some ways minor quibbles, but the album would have been better if it wasn't sometimes trying so hard. And this is still a better than her first one, which was more straight up country, but did feel more genuine. Overall this is an easy pickup and one of the better albums I bought this year. Great alt country with a ton of solid musicianship and nice mix of organs, steel guitar, fiddle, etc.

I saw Nikki Lane for the first time at the Fillmore East in Maryland, where she knocked the audience for a loop with her raw power and kick-ass attitude. I became an instant fan, and bought the album there expecting it to capture the same energy, and planning to buy her other album here on Amazon. Sadly, the production on this CD is so smooth that if it didn't have several of the same songs I heard at the show, it would be hard to tell it's her singing. This doesn't do her justice at all, so I'll hold off buying more recordings until someone gets a live show right, and stick with seeing her live in the meantime.

Great album, refreshing music and songwriting. So long as she stays true to her roots she'll do just fine. (aka don't pull a Taylor Swift!)

Can't really say much bad about this music at all. Very Americana and she's from Greenville, SC. She turned her back on that place to get her start but you can tell from listening to her that she sings from her heart and her roots.

This CD doesn't do justice to the kick-ass belter with a rocking band that I saw at the Fillmore East recently. Nikki Lane knocked the audience for a loop and growled and swaggered like a country pirate--great show! Many of the songs from the show are on this CD, but the sound here is smoother and more harmonious. Music is still great, she's a terrific singer, but I can't wait for a live CD!

This is great music. Terrific songwriting, solid hooks, classy production and arrangements, and an excellent voice to lead it all. I never really cared for rock-country before, but Nikki does it so well! She uses wonderful traditional country sounds behind modern arrangements and smart songs. The lyrics are both personal and universal. Rock and country--this is the best of both worlds.
