The first book in Harkness’s beloved All Souls series, A Discovery of Witches, was an instant New York Times bestseller and the series has since expanded with the addition of subsequent NYT bestsellers, Shadow of Night (2012), The Book of Life (2014), and Time’s Convert (2018), as well as the companion reader, The World of All Souls. The All Souls series has been translated in thirty-eight languages. The popular television adaptation of A Discovery of Witches, starring Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode, was released in 2019 by Sky/Sundance Now, and also broadcast on AMC.

Having spent more than a quarter of a century as a student and scholar of history, Harkness holds degrees from Mount Holyoke College, Northwestern University, and the University of California at Davis. She is currently a professor at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where she teaches European history and the history of science. Harkness has published scholarly articles on topics such as the influence of theatrical conventions on the occult sciences, scientific households, female medical practice in early modern London, medical curiosity, and the influence of accounting practices on scientific record keeping. She has received Fulbright, Guggenheim, and National Humanities Center fellowships, and her most recent scholarly work is The Jewel House: Elizabethan London and the Scientific Revolution.

As someone who loves real photos of places I read about, this book is an amazing companion! I read the books prior to seeing the first season of the TV show. Being able to see the action and locations was wonderful! This book is a great companion as it includes photos of places mentioned. I'm not sure I could *not* read a chapter just to stick with the calendar, but it's a cool idea. Well worth it for true fans!

Deborah Harkness's All Souls trilogy is wonderfully written, incredibly researched and are spellbinding reads. I read the 1800 page trilogy in a couple of weeks. Could hardly put it down. I've just finished a follow up book, Time's Convert primarily based upon and telling the story on one of the tangential characters Marcus. I can't wait until Deborah reveals the next chapter in these characters lives. Very Very Highly Recommended.

I read this book alongside A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night, the first two books in Deborah Harkness's All Souls trilogy. I followed along, chapter by chapter, delving deeper into the world of All Souls that this reading guide provided. Pictures, historical facts, and additional detail provided a deeper understanding into the components that made up these books. Particularly useful during the historical 16th century parts, the guide shed light on many of the intricacies of the time with which I was not familiar, and for that reason, I found it very useful and enlightening.

I was slightly disappointed however to find that the final book in the trilogy, The Book of Life was not included in this guide. I will definitely miss it's companionship while reading that final book.

I shouldn't have bought the kindle version as there are great pictures of locations, but they are too small in the Kindle version. Very nice insights. I like reading a fiction series written by a historian, I looked up all kinds of events and persons which just extended the fun, and this book helps with that research adding the author's insights.

I've loved the trilogy and have read as well as listened to all three on CD. Great world that Deborah Harkness has created in them. Now as to the Reading Companion, I do like the comments and photos---however, I have a pretty clear notion of all the residences and interiors of her world, so seeing what she saw when she was writing is a real perk. My mind's eye has them looking fairly on point with the reality.
Such a good endeavor---love it!

There is nothing at all the matter with this book. It's well expressed and very narrow in scope. It is written for fans of the All Souls trilogy to read "real time" along with the story line. So, whatever happened on Sept. 18th in the book, is read on the 18th of September of whatever year it's being read, following the story line of how Matthew and Diana meet, get acquainted and go through their adventures, one day at a time between mid September to Halloween night. I guess I just expected more :-)
