Who can walk away from the challenge of breaking through the defenses of Luke Archer, the golden-boy quarterback made of ice? Miranda Tate tries to resist. But saying no turns out to be an exercise in futility. Saying yes can’t hurt, as long as you go into the game Luke has orchestrated with eyes wide open, knowing once you make it over the goal line that this affair will have run its course.
Without giving away the plot….
Herkness weaves her story-telling magic with a descriptive, fluid, and seemingly effortless flow of words that dig deep into each character’s flaws, wants, needs, and successes. Each scene raises the sensual factor, until the sexual tension explodes into an inferno. Herkness deftly dances her characters in and out of the flames, throwing burning timbers in their way that bring both Luke and Miranda to their knees and show the strength her characters need to survive the blast furnace of emotions. I found myself totally immersed in the story from the first fiery spiral of the football that brings the two face-to-face in a dispute, through first downs and sacks and interceptions, to the winning touchdown that not only satisfies the reader, but makes them ache for more. One more game. One more super bowl win.
I was asked to give an honest review of this book. I’ll admit I am not a huge football fan. I watch the super bowl because it is an excuse to hang out with friends and watch some mighty fine, honed bodies in action. Herkness’ in depth characterization of what a super bowl winning quarterback goes through physically, mentally, and emotionally is masterful. I’ll never watch a football game again without feeling every hit, celebrating the grace, dance, and strength of the players, and understanding the mental part that dictates each player’s movements on the field. In her heroine, Miranda, Herkness found a tough, relentless opponent, and finally teammate, for Luke.
Although each book in the series stands alone, if you haven’t read, The CEO Buys In, Herkness’ award-winning Book One, do so. I can guarantee after you read both, you will wait in anticipation for Book Three of Wager of Hearts. I know I can’t wait to see what Herkness has in store for the illusive, broody, and snarky hero in the third book of the series.
Miranda is an associate concierge at a high rise in New York City. She's great at what she does and that does not make her manager happy. It is in this capacity that she meets superstar quarterback Luke. He's a resident and apologizes for his brothers poor behavior. The proverbial sparks fly but both have obvious hesitations. Miranda is simple and doesn't know if she could ever fit into his life style. Luke is extremely focused and does not have relationships during the season.
They both know what they have is good, and after spending a week together know it could be great but can they both leave their comfort zones?
The process of them getting to the end is a great read. The dude stories of family drama on both side add to the enjoyment of the story.
Now I can't wait to see how the final bachelor, Gavin, meets his possible happily ever after. Now THAT will be fun to read!
