Editorial Reviews

A year after Raury caught the ears and hearts of music aficionados with his EP, "Indigo Child", which features critically-acclaimed single "God's Whisper", the singer-songwriter/producer readies the release of his debut album, "All We Need" on October 16th, 2015.

The 14-song album features first single "Friends" feat. Tom Morello, and will also include guest appearances from Big K.R.I.T., RZA and Key! and production by Raury, Malay, Danger Mouse, Jacknife Lee, Daytrip, and DJ Kahlil.

MTV recently named Raury an MTV Artist to Watch. Raury is also the critics' 2015 artist to watch and has been featured in Rolling Stone s '10 New Artists You Need to Know,' Billboard's '10 Artists To Watch in 2015,' USA TODAY's '6 Artists Poised to Break Out in 2015,' and Entertainment Weekly's '6 Acts on the Verge.' He was also included in XXL's Freshman 2015 class alongside DeJ Loaf, Fetty Wap, GoldLink, K Camp and more.

Just as the reality began to sink in that Andre 3000 might not come back in the game, along came Raury. The Stone Mountain, GA native and 2015 XXL Freshman is a very good bohemian artist who blends several musical genres that include hip-hop among them, and he is quite original, but there's no getting away from his sonic resemblance to the Outkast member, even if that's not what he should be most known for. On Friday, Oct. 16, the Indigo Child rapper, singer and guitarist surprise-released his studio debut album, All We Need, with Columbia Records, just when we all need an inner state of zen in our lives.

The lovingly smooth production on the album borrows from indie, soul, folk and alternative rock for a soothing backdrop that couples well with Raury's intimately conscious words. He starts by being genuinely concerned for the wellbeing of Black Americans but extends his outreach by criticizing the demons of the modern world overall. Taking a stance that straddles the borderline between empowerment and victimization, Raury brings up some valid points indeed, even if he fails to mention some of the good in civilization's loosing battle, but as the CD moves along, he generally becomes more happy and content, subsequently shedding his rap characteristic completely in the last three tracks.

In "All We Need," love is the answer for Raury within a sick, twisted system where the odds are stacked up against him and his people, and as if on purpose, the Outkast fandom comes out front and center in "Forbidden Knowledge" as Big K.R.I.T. plays an unmistakable Big Boi angle next to the Andre 3K in Raury. He reminisces about past good times in "Woodcrest Manor II" (there's the happiness coming out), and RZA of all people kicks a verse in the "CPU" love song.

After hearing Raury perform Devil's Whisper on The Late Show, I knew I had to get this album. I have not regretted the purchase. Over the course of 14 tracks, Raury takes you on a trip to his roots, gives you thoughts about the present, and finishes with his hopes for the future. He obviously thought about the construction of his songs but, even better, the construction of the album. It flows nicely from track to track, mellow at times (Her, Kingdom Come), upbeat at others (Crystal Express, Friends), and even a little dark and gritty (Trap Tears, Forbidden Knowledge). You'll find yourself bobbing along more than once to the soulful hip hop mix and feel hopeful at the end, too.

I haven never heard of Raury until he started releasing singles for this album. I knew the songs were good at first but didn't really pay all that much attention to him because I was not amazed by his first two singles. And then he released Forbidden Knowledge, and I was floored.

Listening to the album as a whole is such a beautiful experience. His set up of the album is perfect and the songs don't feel as if they were carelessly placed around the album, they fit in a comfortable order. The lyrics are gorgeous and probably one of the most important factors of this album. Listen to the words he is singing and be ready to be awed and inspired. He is saying things that actually matter, he is not writing to get his music to hit the charts and please everyone.

As a new fan I understand I don't have the right to say this is HIS best album, but I can say that this is easily in my top 15 best albums. Buy this album, support this album, and sit back and absorb the brilliance of Raury's words.

Raury is wise beyond his years and he is really gifted. His lyrics and music are uplifting and I find myself listening to All We Need over and over. Sad, great, funny, insightful, and beautiful. Poignant that all that is coming from someone so young. A CD good enough that I know I'll buy his next.

Amazingly talented and a fresh sound. Raury blends a variety of African, electronic, folk, rock, and ATL hip-hop to create his own genre. The lyrics are profound and reflect Raury's amazement and horror with the world's hypocracies, voilence, and love.

Great album, I never heard of this guy before. It's like the reincarnation of Dre' 3000 in my opinion. Really gives some hope for the future of the Southern hip hop. It's an overall chill feel, but full of dreamy beats and conscious heartfelt grammar. Simply dope!

This young man has a lot of bars that are very conscious. I'm not sure of how to classify Raury so I will not. Just know that you will listen to understand how he feels as he is very poetic.
