So my wife and family have always thought my preparedness efforts were a lil bit kooky, and when this showed up in the mail the week before we celebrated the 4th of July at the lake they were giving me a hard time about buying a whistle to keep in my EDC bag aka murse.... well we get to the lake and prepare to head out in a friends boat to watch fireworks, 4 adults and 6 kids. The lake is big and choppy and it is known for the HUGE boats on it due to the size of the lake. We get almost to the other side to watch fireworks and my buddy says he's low on gas but should have enough to make it back no problem, we get to the cove watch the firework display and start to head back. We get about half the way back in total darkness with 30-40 foot yachts and speedboats going 50 mph past us and then it happens.... we run completely out of gas! well everyone starts freaking out, we are in a small boat getting tossed around by all the wake and chop of everyone else's boat so everyone starts yelling and screaming to get someone's attention to no avail, I suddenly remember I stuck this whistle in my pocket before we took off and grab it and start blowing, it only took 2-3 blasts before a boat pulled up to help, one of the guys said "whoever thought to bring a whistle did a good job cause that's the only reason we heard you and turned around" well they towed us to the gas station and all was good but had it not been for this whistle it could have turned out much different, bottom line I'm glad I had it and so were all the skeptics of being prepared!
It has a bright orange color that is easy to see.
This is a big whistle and probably not something you would keep on a key chain or regularly carry on you. It would probably be okay if you kept it in a bag, purse or on a lanyard around your neck. There is not really a quiet way to blow this whistle. If you need a whistle with more control you probably should get something like a fox 40. This is for serious super loud whistling.
It is loud at all levels of exertion. Which can be very important in emergency situations. Often, when you need a whistle in a emergency, you may be out of breath. Which makes this whistle great. Unlike compact whistles like the Fox 40 Micro, this whistle produces a good volume with even the slightest breath. The Fox 40 Micro produces no sound at all with light-medium blowing and takes a strong, compressed blow to make a loud sound.
This whistle is also the loudest of any whistle I've ever tried (Fox 40 Micro/SOL Rescue Howler, AMK/SOL Slim Rescue Howler, and the WW-3 whistle, various backpack sternum strap whistles).
The more compact Wind Storm whistle is only very negligibly less loud. For me, the huge size of the Storm makes it the best choice for scuba as it makes the whistle easier to grab and hold while wearing gloves.
However, for whitewater sports, it's far too big to attach to a PFD. For rafting or kayaking, we use the smaller Wind Storm whistles.
For diving and boating this whistle provides the best combination of large size, extremely loud volume and producing sound with light blowing.
I always carry this whistle in my BC while diving.
