Starting out in the late Spring of 2009, at Sphere Studios in London, this much-anticipated Duran/Mark Ronson union flourished, as writing and recording began on an exciting new body of work, which Ronson has boldly stated is the imaginary follow up to Rio that never was. With this newfound partnership, the band was energized and excited by the music they were creating. The result is nothing short of pure Duran Duran brilliance. The album features guest vocals/Rap from longtime Duran Duran pal/collaborator Ana Matronic of the Scissor Sisters and R&B/neo-soul superstar Kelis, while Owen Pallett of Arcade Fire contributes the album's string arrangements.

15 Track vs. 17 Track Special Editions

I bought the 15 track deluxe edition here and the 17 track uber deluxe edition at that truly dreadful big blue box retail establishment that dare not speak its name. If you 15-trackers feel like a fool for not taking the plunge for the extra two tracks: Early Summer Nerves and Too Close to The Sun, don't. They're good, really good, but not essential. While the rest of the album is an urgent, cohesive, modern work of genius that recalls their best, first two albums; the two bonus tracks sound like leftovers from the latter eras of the band. Too Close To The Sun is long, sweeping, has a great guitar solo and a beat that would have fit nicely on Notorious. Early Summer Nerves is a sexy song that could have propped up Liberty or Medazzaland: tons of synth, Nick (Rhodes) at night type stuff. The packaging is the exact same as the 15-track, save for a cardboard wraparound sleeve that corrects the tracklist. Remove the sleeve, you actually have an incorrect tracklist there to greet you.

Now if you bought the initial 9 track version, or the 14 track regular edition, should you fret? Heck yeah.

For you 9 trackers, you are really missing out. Sure two of the five additional tracks are very short orchestral instrumentals, but they add a sweeping, over the top crescendo to the proceedings that this masterpiece deserves. The other three tracks are epic. Plus, you're missing out on the artwork. As you'll learn on the disposable DVD, Nick Rhodes sought out a gifted artist, Clunie Reid and had her re-interpret some original photos of the band and partying girls. Nary a Nagel in sight. Combined with the tri-fold-out sleeve and embossed cover, it's a gorgeous package. Granted, you'll fight like a bear in a beehive to pry the darn discs out of the tight cardboard lips.

Now you 14-trackers are missing out on an album highlight: Networker Nation is a massive rock song that would have killed on Seven and the Ragged Tiger. Great beat, awesome guitars, massive chorus - Andy Taylor must be kicking himself he left the band this early... again.

Here's hoping the BB bonus tracks, and the Japan-only b-sides Boys Keep Swinging (cover) and This Lost Weekend come out as MP3 tracks soon.

Welcome back Duran Duran. But next time, please, just one all-inclusive version so that all of your fans can get the great music they deserve.

Best Album Ever by One of the Best Bands Ever

What kind of freak of nature enables a pop rock band - consisting of guys in their early 50s - to put out its best album, 30 (THIRTY) years after its debut? Can you imagine the Beatles, the Stones, Led Zep putting out their best album in the late 1990s?

Forget the guys' looks and videos - Duran Duran is comprised of extremely talented songsmiths, with a gift for melody, and truly remarkable musicians. Seeing them live last night, it's stunning to consider they could play a whole different set list, consisting of entirely different songs, but just as great and beloved by the world.

But back to this album. It is so great because it unabashedly embraces the sound that Duran invented and made famous in the first place. And wonder producer Mark Ronson gets the credit for that. Why on Earth did Duran spend the 1990s trying to invent a new sound? Did they think they would top the original?

Ronson promised fans the sequel to Rio, but honestly Ronson and the band outdid themselves and topped that album to create their best to date. Highlights: Girl Panic!, Blame the Machines, Safe, Too Bad You're So Beautiful, Other People's Lives, and Being Followed. Other greats included Leave a Light On, Before the Rain, and Man Who Stole a Leopard. Perhaps the weakest track is the title track, but that's great too, so it's really wall to wall songs, each of which could have been a top 10 hit in the 80s.

Thank God for Mark Ronson, thank God for Duran Duran.

A Blast From the Past

Overall, I like this album and do not regret buying it. It's apparent that the band cared about making a quality album that they hoped their fans would appreciate. The Classic Albums-style DVD that is packaged with the album is awesome, and it would be so cool if all new albums came out with something along these lines. The fact that they commissioned an artist they appreciate to do a bunch of artwork for the packaging shows that they were paying attention to all the details. Their choice of Mark Ronson as a producer was a wise move in trying to make themselves sound current while simultaneously revisiting their classic sound. Paradoxically, herein lies the primary reason for giving the album four stars instead of five.
I am almost as much a fan of Mark Ronson's albums released under his own name as I am of Duran Duran's stuff. What I enjoy about the music he creates/produces is that he has a very hip approach to combining genres as well as new- and old-school sounds. So when Duran Duran decided that they wanted to revisit the feel that they had on their classic eighties albums while also sounding current, Mark Ronson was clearly an appropriate choice to produce. Unfortunately, some of his production choices may have weakened the album a bit, especially the flagrant use of auto-tune on Simon Le Bon's vocals, which we know from all their classic works is totally unnecessary.
It seems to be a trend for aging bands to go back to their earlier sound in order to get fans who stopped buying recent albums to come back around. One prime example that comes to mind is Metallica's album Death Magnetic. That album, almost song for song, sounded like slight variations of songs on their first four albums--so much so that I removed the album from my iPod entirely because I figured I might as well just listen to the classics and not inferior knockoffs.
Fortunately, although many involved in making All You Need Is Now specifically mention attempts to emulate earlier songs on the accompanying DVD, the songs on this album do sound original enough that they merit repeated listening. It seems the challenge of putting out an album like this is that reviewers like me are--like it or not--effectively comparing it to their greatest hits collection, which it is only fair to acknowledge is a compilation of the cream of the crop from eight or so albums. So if this album contains a handful of five-star songs, in the end, it's hard to complain. It will take more time for me to determine which songs I would put on the level of the ones I enjoy from their various greatest hits collections, but hopefully some of the tunes will end up being just as classic; while, as on their earlier albums, some will be likely to fall by the wayside. I can already say that "Being Followed" is an instant classic.
I want to close on a positive note by mentioning that I find the title of the album and the message implied by it to be valuable and relevant not only to the current reality of the band, but to all of our lives. That phrase can be used as a mantra if you find yourself brooding over something from the past. Why not focus on the present and stay optimistic?
