About the Author

Hiroshi Sakurazaka was born in 1970. After a career in information technology, he published his first novel, Wizards’ Web, in 2003. His 2004 short story, “Saitama Chainsaw Massacre,” won the 16th SF Magazine Reader’s Award. His other novels include Slum Online and Characters (cowritten with Hiroki Azuma).

Way better than the live-action movie, Edge of Tomorrow

I didnt know that Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise is actually just a live-action of this manga. This manga is based off a Japanese Syfy light novel. And I tell you what the movie does not do it justice at all. I thoroughly enjoyed reading through this even though I've seen the movie first. I always liked reading the source material if I could and I do like it much better. There is just a lot more substance with reading the manga then watching a live action. If you like reading manga, like sci-fi, or even like Edge of Tomorrow minus Tom Cruise, then you will enjoy this one. It is a two-in-one omnibus, so you can really read the series in one sitting. My only complaint is that the cover has a weird feel to it. It's not glossy, it's not matte... It has a slight fuzz to it that attracts dust like no tomorrow. It does not detract from how good the Munga is especially if you could get it for less than $12.

Takeshi Obata's art can make any story intense. His ability to make pleasant designs is uncanny and how he illustrates expressions really gets the characters' feelings get across. Together with Takeuchi, they make an enthralling manga of the hit novel. I thought the characters were likable, but not in a trope-like fashion. Some characters were things like your token jokester, genius mechanic, and stern leaders, but when you get to know them, they turn out more developed than you'd expect.

The pacing was solid, too. I didn't feel like anything dragged on, ever. And the story is just grand. Despite its brevity, you feel satisfied with the ending; like it ends where it's supposed to.

Personally, I prefer this adaptation over the movie, so if you had to pick one, go with this.

Based very closely on the book of the same name All You Need Is Kill this well drawn manga is the collected tankoban. I really liked the story and was excited when I heard it was being adapted to manga.

Basically Groundhog Day circular time plus Starship Troopers/Armour (aliens attacking earth and mech suit battles).

The US film Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow (Blu-ray + DVD) is loosely based on this story. An enjoyable movie, but likely as different as an adaptation could be.

The OTHER comic based on this All You Need Is Kill (Graphic Novel) is terrible and I returned it. It is the US version, more abridged than a half burned Cliff's Notes.

I first heard about All You Need is Kill after seeing the film Edge of Tomorrow. That movie was cool, but seemed like maybe they cut and chopped it to make it more "American" and less Japanese. And when I read the book I realized this was very much the case. The movie was fun, and had some fantastic action. The ending seemed a bit...forced compared to the rest of the film though. Reading the book I realized that this was because the ending was completely changed from what is kind of a sic-fi classic feel that would have been a great film in the hands of say... Ridley Scott, into something a bit less of a downer.

The book was no prize winner either though. It's depressing, dark, gritty, poorly written, and thoroughly unlikable in every way, from it's constantly dark and dismal atmosphere to it's extremely de-humanized human cast. But when I spied the manga in a bookstore and gave it a quick look I was shocked...in the best possible way.

Evangelion Meets Groundhog Day Meets Starship Troopers Meets Bubblegum Crisis Meets Awesome, Awesome, Awesome!

You know how the very very best Anime and Manga manages to carefully tread the line between Eastern and Western styles, with things that would clearly never happen (or almost never) in American pop-culture (like strong women who aren't trying to be men, or an existential/philosophical crisis), and yet enough character development, extroverted action, and quick-snap whiz-bang attitude to keep you from falling asleep or scratching your head? I'm talking like Macross, Gundam, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, you get the idea. Well, this Manga PERFECTLY walks that line.

Eye Candy

I checked this book out at the library after seeing it's stunning artwork in a bookstore. After reading maybe an eighth of it I knew I had to buy it immediately. Yeah, it's art is dark and grisly as a horrible monster attack on the human race would be. It's also absolutely gorgeous with mechs that are far more Japanese than American in style. They look like people are wearing plug-suits from Evangelion and the suit over them is from Bubblegum Crisis or Starship Troopers (the book). In other words, the suits and mech/jackets look AWESOME. Not like the clunky junk from the movie. No, these look like the kind of awesome that the Japanese military really would build to fight an interstellar war, with helmets that completely cover the head, and HUD read-outs like Iron Man's Suit or (again) Starship Troopers. The action is absolutely amazing, and there are lots of full-page or nearly-so pieces of art that are absolutely incredible.

Judge a Book By It's Cover

Yeah, yeah, great art. And a story to match. All of the extraneous and confusing junk from the book was streamlined, improved, and generally made both more understandable and more entertaining. And to top it off, everyone is ENORMOUSLY more likable. Instead of being constantly confused by everyone's behavior, masterful art angles, attention to detail, and editing make everything obvious.

The first time you encounter Rita, you are in awe. When you see how tiny and cute looking she is, the POINT of the book becomes crystal clear. It is not about physical build, but about mental skill. This is something that ONLY the Japanese could comprehend and push so dramatically. As the plot develops and we see why Rita is the way that she is, we grow to love her just as the protagonist does (who seems much less of a loser than in the book).

By the end of the book, I was overwhelmed with heartbreaking emotion at the conclusion. It was exciting. It was moving. It was incredibly entertaining. It made me wish there was an anime film or OVA or TV show because it was just so GOOD! And yes, all that despite the fact that I had already read the book and knew how it ended.

All You Need is This Manga

If you like a good action manga, sci-fi, or mecha, or even just appreciate great artwork and a great story, you are going to love this manga. Not recommended for young kids though, as they will both not comprehend the story, and the gruesome death-by-alien-monster artwork would be disturbing. To everyone in the target audience, it's a must-read.

This was my first foray into manga and I must say, I was more than satisfied. The story and the art of this was absolutely amazing. A very engaging read. The right-to-left format didn't take very long to get used to and the artists used every space on the page to its greatest potential; the translation into English was very smooth as well. I'm a particularly big fan of all the onomatopoetic words the writers/artists used to represent all the sounds that occurred. I could picture the soundscape of the environment and battlefields pretty reliably. Very fun read. All the parallels to Edge of Tomorrow and all the things that were intentionally altered or omitted in the film adaptation was also very interesting to think about. I'd recommend this to almost anyone who appreciates a good graphic novel!

I have read the book - which was excellent - and seen the movie - which was good, but this is the best version so far! I ploughed through this in a couple of hours and it was brilliant from start - the back of the book - to finish - the front. Yep, it reads from back to front pagewise and from right to left regarding panels and speech bubbles. The cover material is very weird and has a rubbery texture to it - maybe the feel of cold, dead flesh? Anyway, if it gets any marks on it, mine had a few glossy marks from new which I thought would never come off, carefully wipe it down with a warm damp sponge - not wet, and don't get any on the pages - dry it off with a towel and it comes out looking pristine. Very strange stuff.

I bought this after I watched the movie adaptation because I really liked the whole idea. I was not disappointed, in fact I loved it more than the movie. The first half is pretty close to the movie, but after the middle things start to diverge greatly and you have no idea what is about to happen. The artwork is very good, the aliens have an unusual style, but they are still very menacing. I liked the ending and I would definitely recommend it if you liked the movie. Even if you didn't, this provides a much more mature story.
