I grew up and learned to love Science Fiction reading the works of Robert Heinlein. His works are the standard by which all science fiction is judged. All I can advise other raters is control yourself. If you are not very kind you will give too many one star reviews to the works of other authors as you compare them to the works of Mr. Heinlein. Read Starship Troopers and Stranger in a Strange Land back to back and see if you can grok Mr. Heinlein.

As a youth I was a huge fan of Robert A. Heinlein, and I thought I had read all of his stories. Somewhere along the time line I missed this one, unless of course it was written in one of Heinlein's alternate universes, and it just manifested in this one. In that case I have more serious things to deal with than book reviews.
This story is classic Heinlein. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is its brevity. It is a very short short story. I was originally going to buy it as part of a Science Fiction anthology for my Kindle, but opted to buy it individually instead. You will get more value for your dollar if you buy the anthology. I would write more about the plot, but why spoil a good paradox wrapped in an anachronistic conundrum? Besides, I need to go deal with my cat. He's head-butting the wall. Stupid beast thinks she can walk through them...

I originally read this story in high school, almost half a century ago. It struck me s a "neat" story, an exploration of an irreconcilable time travel paradox. When I read it again, all these years later, I saw something much grander in its design. It is less a story about time travel than it is about solipsism, the notion that we can prove our own existence with Descartes's old saw, "I think therefore I am," but that the existence of anyone and anything else is, at best, non-provable. It includes the possibility that everything and everyone else in the universe is a product of our imagination. Without explaining and spoiling the story, I'll only say that the apparent time travel paradox in the story may instead be a way of demonstrating or debunking that notion.

When I started reading RAH's books in the mid 1950's I was totally hooked. I especially loved the parts with the past shown from protagonist's view from, for example, 1998. I now feel like one of his characters, when at age 75 I read about the past in his stories, and there is no correlation to the past as I know it. Even his great imagination did not seem to cover things like cell phones. On the other hand, when we did make it into space I was bored rather than excited. We had made it so much farther in his stories. I miss all his zombies.

Not one of Heinlein's best, interesting in keeping the logic of the story together

This is technically a short story, written by Heinlein in one day (11July, 1958). It was kicked around, first to Playboy (why Hefner turned it down would be a fascinating story), but was finally published on one of the Scifi pulps. It was nominated for a Balrog award (don't ask me, I don't follow awards, even the Nobels).

It's about a man who is both his own father and mother. Beyond that, deponeth sayth not. It is time travel story, a device difficult to carry off, but Heinlein carried it off well. Not quite up to his later "Number of the Beast" and "The Cat who walks through Walls", but good as a mid career story. He would through those 2 books (which are considered major parts of his "world as myth" series) setup a wonderfully new use for time traveling. If you're a Heinlein fan you'll like it.

I wanted to read this after I saw the movie "Predestination." Although they did add something to the movie that was not in the story (the bomber), I don't think that really harmed the story very much overall as far as the movie goes. Standing alone, the short story was a little confusing to me and I'm glad I had seen the movie before reading it or else I might have just been wondering what it was all about. I still don't get the end and where "All you zombies" came from.

What I love about this book is confusing, as is the book. On my first read I did not completely understand its genius, and I'm still a bit lost. Personally, I love this book. My only little gripe is that the writing style threw me through the loops. I couldn't quite get a grasp for it.

THen I read it five, or ten, times more. Slowly the connections started being made in my head, and I felt the connection to the world grow. It was a well priced book, it left me thinking, and I can't say I was disappointed. AS an introduction to Heinlein, this was great.

It is only 19 pages, however, some readers should be wary. The price may be steep, but personally I think it was worth it. I spent more time thinking about this short story than I have a lot of dumb movies in recent years.
