So how do I do it and get away with it? P. Allen Smith's 50 card deck of recipes for year round container gardening. The deck is broken down into the four seasons, and each card carries suggestions for putting several different plants in the same container. The suggestions vary from plants that do well in the sun to those that thrive in the shade.
So now instead of growing one type of plant in each container, I have boldly branched out and mixed my pots with exciting colors and textures.
If you love his gardening show and his books, give this card deck a try. The ideas work on an apartment patio, house deck, front or back porch.
He has created beautiful pictures and it is fun to look at. The cards are broken up by seasons, not plant requirements. This is a problem as you can't just look for a shade pot for your back porch. Some cards don't even have necessary information on all of the plants. They don't address different zones, which is frustrating as I am a zone 4 gardener, and don't believe I could winter any potted plants outside. He also doesn't address planting issues, and some (many) of the cultivars are very hard to find. You would have to special order them from a nursery, which again, is not helpful. It might be much more useful for people who are in the same zone as him (which zone I do not know).
All in all, I would not buy these cards. The pictures are beautiful, but it just does not include enough information to create a successful garden creation.
