Product Description

Allen Sports' Premier Hitch Mounted 2-bike carrier mounts quickly and easily to your 2" or 1 1/4" trailer hitch. The arms "snap" into place right out of the box. Allen's new dual-compound cradle system securely holds your bicycles in place and the rack's large padded Spine Shield protects your bicycles as well. In addition to the easy folding arms on this rack, the new innovative internal tilt-away release makes it a snap to access your vehicle's rear lift gate. The powder-coated rack installs in just minutes with a no-wobble bolt and an integrated locking loop offers a place to secure your bikes.

Summary: This rack is sturdy and will carry two bikes without a problem, providing you take the time to install it correctly. I recommend getting two wrenches (for the 1.25" hitch, use 9/16") and one of them should be a socket wrench if you'll ever be in a hurry.

The good:

- Peace of mind. Sturdiness is a big problem with a lot of hitch-mounted racks. However, this model has a no-wobble bolt which does a great job, provided you use the correct bolt, the correct hole on the hitch insert, and the correct locknut orientation (lockring faces in, towards the bolt head). Installed correctly, the bikes barely move even when on bumpy terrain.

- Easy access. The rack can be lowered out of the way of the trunk to allow trunk access without removing bikes or the rack, which is very handy. The arms also fold down to save space if you're storing the rack.

- Hard to detach from the hitch. This is both a good and a bad thing. To remove from the hitch, you need two wrenches and at bare minimum two minutes of speedy de-wrenching. This works pretty well as a theft deterrent, although I still recommend getting a thick cable lock for a longer trip.

The bad:

- Bungees not included. I was disappointed to learn that this rack did not come with any sort of stabilizing system for the bikes. If you attach the top tubes to the rack and nothing else, the bikes will swing drastically forward and backward, hitting each other and the back of your vehicle as you brake and accelerate while driving. You'll need to pick up a set of 6-10 bungees of varying length to secure the lower portions of the bike to the rack or your vehicle, depending on how much redundancy you want and whether spinning wheels in your rearview mirror will bother you.

This bike mount does a great job of securing my BikeE recumbent bike (mounted upside down). I mount the bike on the racks closet to the car, and once strapped down with bungees, it's a secure fit. The problem I have with this bike carrier (reason for 3-stars) is its loose fit in my U-Haul 1 1/4 inch trailer hitch receiver. The carrier wobble was so severe when the vehicle was in motion that I was afraid to transport my bike to the riding path. Since that episode I've ordered a 1 1/4 inch hitch clamp that has solved the wobble problem. I feel that the "Premier" version of Allen's Sports Hitch should come fully equipped. And that means including a hitch clamp, or a recommendation to optionally include one at time of purchase, at the customer's expense (of course).

We put it on our Honda Odyssey EX then loaded our tandem on it...works great. Because the bike is a tandem, it takes a few more bungies to keep it secure and it's a bit crooked but it's fine. Our old one was the same situation. The tilt feature is way better than our old one....gets way down and out of the way so our tailgate opens.

A few suggestions: if you use a regular trailer and pin, which is easier to remove and put in, the entire rack will jiggle. If you use the bolt and nut that comes with it, you'll be tightening forever so use a ratcheting box wrench or a regular ratchet. I use both my trailer hitch and the bike frame hitch so the box wrench comes in handy as I change both out quite frequently.

I love everything about this rack except the type of rubber they used on the straps. It's very compact, the no wobble bolting system is great, very easy to use and super compact when folded. They recommended using a secondary strap from the rack to the top of my hatch back, which makes the easy fold away lever kind of useless if I have to undo that strap every time I want to open my trunk. Also, the design of the rubber straps to secure each bike to the rack is great. Quick and easy to use. BUT, the rubber is degrading apparently after only about a month of use. Every time I touch them I get black stuff all over my hands, and of course then my clothes. It doesn't just wipe off, I have to keep a rag and bottle of hand sanitizer in my car. It's pretty annoying. Especially when people are impressed with the rack and want to try the straps and now their hands are covered in black, too. I hope Allen addresses the issue in the future. It almost makes me want to return the rack.

I will not give a favorable rating to a product which is advertised as "premier" but requires additional parts in order to fit my 2" receiver. If the product details state that the bike rack will fit 2" receiver hitches, that is exactly what it should do. After installing this on my Class III receiver, I found the wobble to be so bad that I am afraid to transport my bike anywhere. Instead I now have to go find a hitch clamp of some sort to eliminate the wobble. Even the installation instructions say that filler plates should be installed for 2" receivers, yet there is no mention of this on the product's listing or details. Unacceptable.

This is a good quality, sturdy and easy to assemble and use bike carrier. I had it out of the box and fully assembled on my Ranger PU in about 20 minutes. As an added bonus, the included instructions are complete and easy to read and follow (something a rarity these days!)

Why only 3 stars? Allen has assumed that you will be assembling this and permanently leaving it on your vehicle. The carrier is held together with ASTM Grade 5 bolts and nylon jam-nuts which will not vibrate loose while you're driving. The problem is that these type of jam-nuts are not designed or intended to be constantly removed and replaced; the nylon will develop "threads" which will eventually defeat the purpose of the vibration resistance of the nuts. I don't intend to leave this carrier on full time because I also use the truck to haul a trailer. So I am concerned about wearing out the nylon hardware by fairly frequent swapping between this carrier and my trailer hitch. Also, you'll need to break out the socket set and end wrenches every time to want to remove or install the Carrier. And trust me on this - you won't want to remove or insert this carrier into your receiver while it's fully assembled unless you have a second set of helping hands (or the Hulk's physique). You'll want to remove the "RR Post" from the Hitch Insert first. And that renews the concerns about the nylon jam-nuts.

Issue #2: The bolt (or lock) that you use to hold your trailer hitch in your receiver will not work with this Carrier - you have to use the special bolt that comes with the Carrier. I use a hitch lock so I don't have to worry about my expensive trailer hitch walking off with a stranger. But it won't work with this Carrier.
