My fishes heater failed; they're cold, and complaining!

This is the second unit that I received from Amazon for the same small pond, and, unfortunately, both units failed in short order. The first one worked okay for a month or two prior to failing, and the second unit lasted less time. In both cases, the heating elements corroded and split open, exposing the inner wires and likely shorting out the unit. I figured it was bad luck the first time around, although, I'm not sure why a unit that is designed to reside in water would corrode, but it did. The second unit, which Amazon replaced at no charge, had the same issue, but it took less than half the time to fail. The second failure occurred when the temperature dropped for several days, and 2-3 inches of ice formed on the pond's surface. I missed the time window to return this unit to Amazon, so I'll either contact the manufacturer to see if they can provide me with a more reliable unit or select a different manufacturer next time.

I was guilty of relying on the "Best Seller" label ...

I was guilty of relying on the "Best Seller" label without reading the reviews where many people point out that you need to purchase the $12 guard for this heater if you are placing it in a garden pond, even though it says "perfect for garden ponds" in the description. That brings the price of this product closer in line with some of the other offerings on Amazon. Also, I failed to register that the cord is only 6'. Most electrical items for ponds (pumps, etc) come with extra long cords since outlets don't tend to be super-close to water. This means I needed to use an extension cord. The heater it replaced had a cord that was twice as long.

So, read carefully. Minor inconveniences if it does the job, but I'm not sure I would have bought this so readily if I had read more carefully.

Powerful De-Icer/Heater

Had mine for the whole year. Still looks new. Works great kept my whole pond not only deiced but completely de iced. The whole pond never froze with this sucker going. Costs a bit to run but its a heater.... what do you expect. I have rocks in my pond so I didn't need to buy the cage. So although some people get upset about it not being included - I don't need one so I am glad I didn't have to pay for one. Works great the fish like to bask in its warm glory. Does the trick! For those complaining its not a heater... well no joke it float on the top and water and melts ice... :) If you need a heater expect a lot more money to be spent. I bet this would work as a heater in a small pond - just be careful :)

Good News Bad News - Beware

First, the good news. This pond heater works and it works well. As I type this review, our house is under a foot of snow and the temperatures are just barely out of single digits. Still, our pond pump is burbling away, thanks entirely to this pond de-icer. Pond dimensions might help you in your consideration of this purchase. Ours is a small irregularly shaped pond (it shaped like italy or florida), around 700 to a thousand gallons. About 14 ft long by 3 feet wide and averages about 2.5 ft deep. None of the pond is frozen at the moment. The fish (YES! it is safe for fish!) are swimming, albeit slowly, but last year at this time they were frozen in place all winter and had to wait till spring to thaw and swim around again (yes, they all thawed and survived, but still...) The heater works as advertised and was a cinch to install, sort of... keep reading....

Now for the bad news.... As other reviewers have pointed out, nowhere in the description does it mention that you cannot use this without the optional heater guard when using in a plastic or rubber pond. Our pond has a freeform PVC sheet (okay, don't get on me for this.... I am ignorant about materials and am just assuming its PVC but it might be something else) over a sand bottom and we needed to install the cage guard which meant that not only did it cost an additional 10 or 15 dollars, but, we couldn't use the heater right out of the box AND it also could have done damage to our pond (or so I am assuming) if we hadn't noticed that the cage was required. I just think that more people than not are going to need the guard so this deserves a big mention in the product description, OR, now here's a concept.... Why not include the cage guard with the product (since many of us will need it) and those who don't actually need it can sell theirs on the amazon marketplace to the rest of us when ours start to rust or become otherwise unusable.

Overall, great product but I have my quibbles.

Great for Stock tank...beware for Ponds

I have a metal stock tank and purchased to use there for our horses and goats. We get solid ice & snow and there is nothing worse than needing to go outside in the cold and break the ice. When it's really cold; this unit didn't make the entire top melted yet enough even the goats easily broke through more if needed. Kept the ice layer very thin or non existent. Didn't make the water hot and undrinkable. Just melted and a little warmer in the livestocks stomach.

The cord is about 6 feet long so I needed to attach to an outdoor extension cord for use. It does not have a on/off switch. It's either plugged in and working. Or unplugged. I've wondered why no on/off switches, but none I've owned had them.

I was completely satisfied with this unit. So why not 5 stars? It is listed a floating pond de-icer. Yet I wouldn't use this in my pond. My pond is made from a "liner" and you have to make a separate purchase of a "heater guard" to use this in your pond. I quickly looked around; and couldn't even find where to purchase the guard. Most importantly, in the description it doesn't state need optional heater guard to use in a pond. That is very misleading in my opinion and would me a very unhappy customer if I purchased to use in my lined pond.
