Fast forward to today and this Allsop Orbitrac 3 Pro Vinyl Record Cleaning System. I think this is a very handy system that definitely removes dust and fingerprints from my vinyl records and doesn’t have the downsides that my old anti-static groove brush had (I won’t even address my old t-shirt method). I now clean my vinyl on the protective non-skid pad before placing the record on the turntable. The pivot pin of the orbitrac body (cleaning pad arm) goes into the record hole and the cleaning cartridge is rotated around the record 3-4 times. The combination of the cleaning cartridge pad and cleaning solution does a much better job picking up dust and wiping off dirt and fingerprints than a dry anti-static brush. After a few turns, the record is clean and ready to play. I’m getting far fewer pops and skips after using this system.
Just a few negatives. The cleaning solution will run out eventually and have to be replaced, as will the white cloth pile cleaning cartridges (you get 2 cartridges). But that’s just the nature of the product and a relatively small price for me to pay to get a crisp, clear sound without the risk of damaging my turntable motor. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to put together and use the Orbitrac (there are illustrations and directions in English and French on the inside lid cover), but after the first couple of cleanings, it’s been smooth sailing.
I really like this set though partly because you get everything you need, but it's also well though out and it works extremely well. One nice thing about it is that you get a mat to lay on a table and the way that you clean the records is by laying them on the mat and then rotating the brush and not the album. In the Discwasher years I'd sit on the floor while I was playing a record and listen, wishing I could clean up more records, but you really had to use the turntable itself to get the most from that cleaning system--the turntable rotated the records while you held the brush in one spot. It worked but once the turntable was in use, you had to wait do do any more cleaning. With this system you can clean a record, put it on the turntable and then go ahead and clean as many more pieces of vinyl as you want.
In this set you get two brushes that fit into the cleaning holder, a jar of cleaning spray and a small spindle pin to center the brush holder on the vinyl. All that you do is spray the solution onto the pad, then rotate the brush a few times around the vinyl--and it works great. I'm sure that I'll run out of spray sooner or later and have to buy more, but you had to buy fluid for the Discwasher, too. I really like this system, I like the idea behind it and again, it works beautifully. If you're playing vinyl or digitizing your collection, this is a great accessory. I also recently got a portable (USB recharging) turntable with built-in speakers and this will be great for cleaning up records for that.
It is nicely portable, so good to take away from home with you. Pack some fresh inner sleeves so you can go on your safari and clean your new old find and slip it into fresh duds to avoid contamination.
I will use a different surfactant at home, and the bottle is refillable. I just do not like the one that is included, not because it does not clean well enough, but because of the warning not to use on shellac or 78 rpm.
The brushes are okay. But I keep one for washing (5 turns seems good enough to loosen and remove most of the dirt) and then I use the other with purified water for a rinse job. And I keep them separately dedicated. Really dusty records I have salvaged by starting with a pre-wash of just plenty of purified water.
Most "scratches", pops and clicks I find are due to improper cartridge set up. Clean records are quieter with a few plays.
Finally, I do not keep washing the record between plays. That is why I use a fresh sleeve. You should need only interim brushing with a good carbon fiber brush.
