My daughter read this book and this is her review.
The Almshouse is a story about a twelve-year old girl named Julia who gets thrown into the spirit world after dying in a fire. Upon entering, she meets a boy called Lyle, who she quickly becomes friends with. A mystery surfaces when she finds out there's something wrong with Lyle, and Julia tries her best to help him.
Overall, this was an amazing book. The characters were lovable and interesting, and on every page I was eager for more of the story. I like how Julia develops and "grows up," even when dead. There were some grammatical errors that could've been avoided, but other than that I enjoyed the story and its plot twists, mystery, and the suspense at the end.
This book recommended if you just want a short read for the weekend, or just read it for fun. If you like mystery, you'll especially like it. Even if you don't, try it out, it's a great story!

The Almshouse grabbed me right from the beginning. It was a cool, unique take on the spiritual world, and I liked the idea of ghosts ‘helping each other’ to move on. My only complaint is that I wanted to know more about the Reapers. Hopefully in the sequel!

The Almshouse is a fantastic and quick-paced read. The I was drawn immediately into the Julia, the main character's, world. It's a world that is full of evil and injustice, yet is at the same time surprisingly innocent. This book is filled with charming and relatable characters, which are truly its strength. King does a remarkable job not only creating her characters, but growing them in believable ways throughout the story.

The plot moves rapidly, so watch out. I can't say too much more without spoiling things. Suffice it to say that King has followed the Chekov's gun principle to the letter, scrubbing this novel of anything boring or irrelevant. It's a book you can finish on a weekend, but it stays with you. It's a tale of good and evil, of childhood, and growth, and of sin and redemption. The Almshouse is one of the most unique books I have read in a long time, and I would highly recommend it.

A fun and unique story with good character development. It's nice to read about characters like Julia, Lyle and Melinda that you really care about. This book sort of reminds me of Bradbury's From the Dust Returned with a tiny bit of "Ghost" thrown in, but whereas the Bradbury book reads more like a fantasy this evolves into a mystery. It's one of those books that you can't put down but yet hate to see it end. I'm hoping that some of the same lead characters, particularly Julia and Lyle return in the sequel.

I was truly enthralled by this book! It was nice to read from the ghost's point of view. This story has the trials and tribulations from a ghost cemetery. I found it refreshing and hard to put down. Kudos to the author who made me read this book from beginning to the end wondering what was going to happen next. Highly recommended!!

Julia's story beguiled me. I had to keep reading. This haunting and original novel layers its thoughtful and surprising world building with character development and a thread of mystery. This is a coming of age novel with a difference. Unusual it might be, but it is gently respectful of a young woman's emotional journey. Lovely.

A poignant, quaint ghost story that pulls at your heart strings. Twelve year old Julie dies in a fire at her boarding school and finds herself in a society of ghosts. She befriends Lyle, a young male spirit who has no memory of his past or of how he died. There is a mystery surrounding Lyle, one that Julie is set on uncovering the truth of. This story has a sad beauty to it, it is a tale of self discovery, of facing not only the evils of the world but also the darkness inside of ones self. The characters are likeable and have depth, especially Julie who you can see grow as the story moves along. You can not help but feel for these children and the sadness of their lives and death. The narration fits the book well, it was childlike, but seemed to grow along with the characters. This book is a haunting story of discovery, betrayal, friendship and neglect, yet as dark as the premise of this story is, there is also beauty, strength and love.
