Full Review:
In this YA fantasy/alternative-history adventure, a girl and her friends face danger when a villain demands an inventor's plans.
Some months ago, 12-year-old Tee discovered an awesome three-level treehouse equipped with a weighted rope-and-pulley system to fly up from the main road and zip back down. She and her best friends, Elly and Richy, who call themselves the Yellow Hoods for the bright cloaks they wear, love hanging out together in the treehouse, where there's always something new and improved to discover or tinker with, such as the weapons they call shock sticks. There is some disagreement about where these things come from: Tee's grandfather Nikolas Klaus, a master inventor? Magic? Elves? Klaus' creations bring him to the attention of Simon St. Malo, a jealous rival inventor. Believing that Klaus has invented a steam engine, St. Malo hires Andre LeLoup to wrest the plans from him. St. Malo "probably means to transport huge numbers of cannons and soldiers," Klaus muses. Obviously, LeLoup must be stopped. Though initially thwarted, he's a dangerous man with tricks up his sleeve; the Yellow Hoods and Klaus, with their inventions, along with the Cochon brothers (Bakon, Bore, and Squeals) and some other players, plot to run LeLoup out of town. In his debut novel, Dreece mixes clever fairy-tale references (to, for example, "The Three Little Pigs"--LeLoup, the Cochon brothers) with intriguing contraptions, appealing characters, snide villains, humor, and an exciting story. At times, Dreece gets overly cute and giggly, especially in scenes between Tee and her grandfather, and the Yellow Hoods are somewhat interchangeable. But LeLoup's gradual psychological disintegration is a highlight, handled with some real insight into the effect of failure on arrogance. Dreece also weaves in a touching romance between Bakon and Egelina-Marie, a town guard. Abandoned as a child, Bakon has come to believe he's just a lowlife, but Egelina-Marie"inspired him and made him feel more solid inside." Questions are left unanswered but may find resolution in the four books that will follow.
A very promising series opener featuring a young heroine and her pals that should win fans.

From the Author

I loved writing this book. Originally I had envisioned writing a short story, only to find that I had an entire world waiting to be unleashed. The Yellow Hoods provide the youthful element, like Nikolas, the Cochon brothers and others provided the adult element, allowing a reader to enjoy this on multiple levels and from multiple vantage points.

The Yellow Hoods begin the book with Tee nearly driving herself off a cliff. Her father saves her in the nick of time. But by the end of the book, the Yellow Hoods have grown from fearless to truly brave. They not only save themselves, but also the day. Along Came a Wolf is a book about the Yellow Hoods' beginning, but that isn't the only story within this book. There is a bigger storyline which only shows its teeth in here, but will surely be more menacing with its bite in the books to come. The evil schemes are just hinted at, and the significance of the Yellow Hoods and Nikolas Klaus is still not fully revealed. The ending is satisfying, but leaves the reader anticipating the next book. It's clear that something big and bad is on its way.

Along Came a Wolf is a wonderful adventure story about Tee and her friends, who find themselves in danger and eventually become heroes. The characters throughout this book are described very well, especially their emotions and motivations. What I enjoyed most about this book is the relationship between Tee and her Grandfather Nikolas.

Throughout the book, Nikolas encourages Tee's creative and adventurous side, as do her parents. There are great lessons throughout the book such as: don't be afraid to be yourself. The love Nikolas has for his family and friends is a huge theme throughout the book and I found it very refreshing. Many novels today lack this sense of love and family. I found myself smiling at times when Adam described Nikolas' love for his granddaughter.

I also noticed a lot of parenting themes throughout the book and I think this is a great book to read with your children. One of my favorite lines was "He loved that his daughter had spunk, but he felt responsible to make sure she understood where the border with being rude was." I think any parent with a spunky, creative, clever child can relate to this!

Adam did a fantastic job of re-inventing the story of Little Red Riding Hood in a new, creative way. He tied the story together very well from beginning to end and I really enjoyed how the first scene tied together with one of the end scenes. The back stories of each character was told smoothly and did not feel forced or out of place at all.

I would highly recommend this book, especially for those who want to find a book to read with their kids. I can't wait for the sequel!

Okay, so, here's the deal: it's a really, really cute book, but far from perfect.

What I liked:
I found the plot to be very entertaining and engaging, though I wasn't thrown for too many loops (it's not necessary to throw in lots of crazy twists for a story to be good). It is well thought out and while the story is complete on its own, the end opens things up for the sequel if the reader wants to continue. Very compact, very understandable.

The world is fun and colorful, but we don't get nearly enough of its flavor. If you're not so into steampunk but you do like science fiction or fantasy it should still jive for you just fine. And the tech presented is pretty cool, not over-the-top as a lot of steampunk and scifi can be.

The characters are pretty much just adorable all the time (aside from a catch-phrase that is thankfully dropped at the end).

What I thought needed a little work:
Editing. It still felt really rough to be, particularly the first chapter.

Showing-not-telling and exposition. For the sake of plot speed and simplicity it looks as though the author chose to chop down on descriptive phrasing. I got used to it after the first couple of chapters, but it was a little distracting to start off with.

Final verdict:
If you give it a read, please stick with it past the first chapter. I don't promise it's a perfect story, but I feel it is well worth the time spent reading.

[Full disclosure: I did receive a complimentary copy from the author for the purposes of review and to prepare for beta-reading the second book in the series.]

Although Adam Dreece's Yellow Hood series may appear to be for kids, don't be fooled. There was so much magic to be found within the story for a thirty-something-year-old gal. Well written and fast paced, Along Came a Wolf was the perfect fantastical read to enjoy alone as well as with my tween sons. The storyline was empowering, the characters were enchanting, and pieces of the book lingered with me long after I'd set it down. I even found myself walking through the woods after reading the book, hoping a sail cart would come whizzing by.

Thank you, Adam Dreece, for starting a great series and giving me a comfortable introduction to the world of steampunk. I went up a notch in the cool department with my sons. ;)

This book has a completely refreshing intro and storyline. I actually had to reread the beginning because I thought, "Did I read that right? Is that what just happened?" But yeah, that's what happened. I could easily see this being made into a movie that all ages could enjoy. If you have any kid left in you at all, you'll enjoy this book. Be careful reading a few of the reviews though if you don't like spoilers...which I don't.
