Editorial Reviews
Review
"A lyrical homage to India's holiest, moodiest, foulest river... Trojanow is the perfect mix of insider and outsider. A Hindi speaker,he can also stand back and see what makes India tick... It is a treasure of a book, a must-have for anyone spending time on the Ganges and wanting to get to know her better."
-- Susan Elderkin ― Financial Times

I was planning a trip on a small boat down the Ganges and wanted a modern travel guide. I obviously didn't read the info about this book before purchase. My bad. If you want a historical view of life on the river this may suit you.

This book made me want to travel around the world. Every sentence, every single observation of the tourist was explicit up to the point that I was in India. Man, I want to reread this book.

The book begins a little slowly in the upper tributaries of the Ganges, but is well worth following the narrators downriver as they meet and come ot understand a wide variety of rural people living along the banks of the Ganges. A wonderful snapshot of people seldom seen.

Not an easy read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 12, 2014Verified Purchase
While I am enjoying this book, it's far from being an easy read!
The use of Indian words without explanation and the often too-in-depth description of the myths and legends related to the river make it sometimes unintelligible and confusing. The 'travel writing' insights, however, are interesting and revealing, making it, on balance, a worthwhile purchase.

belle balade
Reviewed in France on November 9, 2015Verified Purchase
