Laxer has a way of writing that entwines itself around you, and pulls you in until you live inside this electric energy. I will not describe the structure and content of the book as many reviewers have already done that and you can read the book description for the overview.
What I will say is the pure sensuality of the energy of this book is intoxicating. When talking about the Maiden meeting Pan, Laxer writes: "She rides his wildness and he carries her beauty as he runs, deeper and deeper into the green lushness, the pull of creation urging them forward....The forest becomes a blur, the world their own."
If I would have a criticism of the book it would be that I simply wanted more. More stories. More sexy. More Laxer. This book is a true gem and to this reader, a sexy surprise.
It is, of course, informative as it takes the reader into the dance of the Wheel of the Year and the 8 major Pagan earth celebrations. Judith so beautifully invites the reader into an authentic experience of a living Pagan tradition. Her characters move off the page and into our hearts as they celebrate not just a ritual, but also the very fabric and rhythm of their lives. And as we read, we find ourselves walking with these mothers, husbands, daughters, lovers and friends. Their stories make us laugh, cry, smile, despair, rejoice and hunger for more of our own authenticity and a deeper connection with Mother Earth.
I set aside an afternoon to read the book. But Along the Wheel of Time is like a box of the very best chocolates; it is meant to be savored! Each story is delicious and deeply satisfying. I set the book aside after each story so I could bask in its wisdom and allow my body to fully digest the experiences the story evoked. It took a week to do the first read through and I know that Judith's book will be a companion for years as I walk through and celebrate the Wheel of the Year. Thank you Judith for this provocative and intoxicating book!
Each little gem is created to fill out, dramatize or enhance the nature of the festival. After a terrific introduction in which we discover the basic meanings--useful for the novice but never condescending--we are led into the other world of magick. I found the first few stories to be the most beautiful, although the story of a young maiden's introduction to sexuality was particularly compelling. It would be a better world if girls met womanhood in the protective circle of a coven, free of shame and false modesty, and filled with the wonder and beauty of love and love-making.
I look forward to returning to this book as the year goes on.

As one unfamiliar with the pagan terms, it would be helpful to have more explanation.
